‘NCIS’: Why Mark Harmon is ‘Proud’ to be Apart of the Iconic Movie ‘Stealing Home’

In 1988, “NCIS” star Mark Harmon hit a home run into the hearts of many as a baseball player named Billy Wyatt in “Stealing Home.” 

During a 2018 interview with Rich Eisen on the “Rich Eisen Show,” Mark Harmon reminisced about the magic of the film. Harmon also discussed some prized props Harmon took from the movie set. 

“What are your memories of the film?” Rich Eisen asked the “NCIS” star as he handed Harmon one of the Billy Wyatt baseball bats the actor had given him previously. 

“I remember that there were only twelve of these made,” Harmon said as he looked over the bat he held over 30 years ago while filming the remarkable movie. 

“I had a couple, and now I have one,” the “NCISactor added with a laugh, adding that he gave some of the twelve batting props away over the years. One of them was to Eisen

During the conversation, the actor discussed the film with Eisen, noting that it has become one of the most universally loved films. 

“Why do you think the movie resonated so much?” Eisen asked Mark Harmon

“I just know that it was a script that hit me like it hit everyone that was in the movie,” said Harmon. “It is one of the movies you do because you love the material.”

The self-proclaimed “coming of age” drama followed Harmon’s character Billy Wyatt after he discovers his childhood love, Katie Chandler, committed suicide. Devastated by his loss, Billy Wyatt must confront the past, while working through his grief. In order to fill one of his lost-loves final wishes, the baseball player sets out on a journey to spread her ashes. 

After portraying Billy Wyatt in the popular baseball flick, Mark Harmon went on to many movie and television roles. 

Mark Harmon starred in television movies, “Shadow of Doubt,” “Long Road Home,” “Fourth Story,” and “Dillinger.” Harmon also had minor roles in the Hollywood hit “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” starring Johnny Depp. In 1996, Harmon took on a starring role as Dr. Jack McNeil in the popular medical drama, Chicago Hope. 

In 2003, the actor portrayed Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the popular television series JAG. His role as the “no-nonsense” naval officer was a fan favorite. Harmon later reprised his role as Gibbs when CBS introduced the hit series, “NCIS.”
