Director Aaron Sorkin defends casting actor Nicole Kidman as Lucille Ball in the upcoming biopic about the actor and producer’s life. Some fans have criticized Kidman for not being the right person to portray Ball.

But Sorkin reaffirmed his faith in Kidman to properly capture the role. The director also pointed out that Kidman isn’t portraying the character Lucy Ricardo but the actor behind the role. In real life, Ball was quite different than her sitcom character. And she often fixed herself up to portray the ditzy Lucy on the popular show.

Kidman’s acting skills will go to great lengths to portray Ball as the authoritative if sometimes controlling figure she was on set. According to Sorkin, the film will follow the production week of an “I Love Lucy” episode but will mainly focus on Ball’s life behind the camera. Kidman will only portray Lucy Ricardo for short moments.

“I think that the people thought that we’ve cast them as Lucy and Ricky Ricardo,” Sorkin told ET. “The film takes place during a production week of ‘I Love Lucy’ – a Monday table read to Friday audience taping, with a whole bunch of long flashbacks which are telling the story that got us here – and because there’s a table read, there’s rehearsals and then there’s tape night, we do see moments of them being Lucy and Ricky Ricardo. We see moments from an episode of ‘I Love Lucy.'”

He looks forward to both Kidman’s and also Javier Bardem’s , who will play Desi Arnaz, performances.

“But mostly they are playing Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball. And they’re going to be fantastic. These are two of the greatest actors ever,” Sorkin said.

The Nicole Kidman Led Biopic Will Explore Lucille Ball’s and Desi Arnaz’s Relationship

Sorkin also went into further detail about what audiences can expect. The heart of the film will be Ball’s and Arnaz’s relationship together. Both Arnaz and Ball worked together and loved each other tremendously until their dying days. But ultimately, their relationship didn’t work.

“Lucy and Desi were madly in love with each other. Madly, madly in love with each other. They also often wanted to kill each other. There was very interesting friction in this relationship,” Sorkin said. “There’s also a big thing that a lot of people don’t know about Lucille Ball, which gets dramatized in this. We start shooting in seven weeks and we’re in prep now and the film will be out around this time next year.”
