We’ve got “some ‘splainin to do” on exactly who will be playing the role of Desi Arnaz, who most famously portrayed the hilarious husband Ricky Ricardo on “I Love Lucy” in the ’50s.
Production for “Being the Ricardos” is now starting. Nicole Kidman is playing Lucille Ball. The movie is not a recreation of “I Love Lucy.” Rather, the biographical drama film will be taking a look behind the scenes of the popular show and investigating the dramatic lives of Ball and Arnaz.
The movie actually takes place over the course of a week during the production of an episode of “I Love Lucy.” During all this, Arnaz and Ball find out about a specific issue that could lead to the downfall of their careers and marriage.
Javier Bardem Role and ‘Being the Ricardos’
So who will be playing the other half of the “I Love Lucy” stars? Desi Arnaz will be portrayed by Javier Bardem. The movie is being directed and written by Aaron Sorkin.
Bardem is most recognizable for his role as a crazed assassin in “No Country for Old Men.” In fact, his role in this movie earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He became the first Spanish actor to be nominated for an Academy Award when he was nominated in 2000 for “Before Night Falls.” However, his two most recent roles are “The Roads Not Taken” and he just wrapped production for “Dune.”
He has also had a highly successful career in a number of different film roles like “Jamón Jamón,” “Carne trémula,” “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” “Boca a boca,” “Los lunes al sol,” “Skyfall,” and “Biutiful.” He has had a lot of success in film with numerous different awards over the years. Bardem is also playing King Triton in the live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid.” There is also a “Bride of Frankenstein” movie coming out that follows Universal’s “Dark Universe” franchise. He will be playing Frankenstein’s Monster.
Some fans of “I Love Lucy” were upset by Bardem being cast as Desi Arnaz. Mostly because Arnaz was Cuban and Bardem is Spanish.
Bardem Personal Life
Besides playing infamous villains in the film industry, Bardem has done more heroic things in real life. For example, he became the ambassador of Greenpeace to protect Antarctica in 2018. He also appeared in 2019 during the March for Climate. He called the mayor of Madrid and the U.S. President “stupid,” but later apologized stating it took away from his overall message of change. He has strictly denounced any form of violence over the years.
Additionally, Javier Bardem is married to popular actress Penélope Cruz. The two actually met while filming the 2008 movie “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” where they played exes. The two had first briefly met in 1992 but didn’t start dating until they worked on the 2008 film together. They got married in 2010 and have two kids together, a son and a daughter.
Although incredibly talented at being evil on screen, Bardem is taking on a very different role as Arnaz in the upcoming “Being the Ricardos” film. Fans of “I Love Lucy” are excited to see the final results.
