Twenty-seven years ago today Saturday Night Live viewers were treated to comedian Norm Macdonald’s first run as host of the popular variety show’s popular Weekend Update segment. And, what a treat it was. The late comedian has long been remembered as one of the most iconic hosts of the hilarious weekly news segment.
Comedian Norm Macdonald joined the Saturday Night Live cast as a regular player in 1993. The late actor and comedian spent a total of five seasons on the popular Saturday evening “not ready for primetime” show. Of these five seasons, Macdonald spent three and a half seasons as the lead host of Weekend Update.
“On September 24, 1994, Norm Macdonald became anchor of ‘Saturday Night Live’s’ ‘Weekend Update,'” noted a Friday afternoon RetroNewsNow Tweet.
The Twitter post included a couple of throwback photos; one is a still of the initial introduction to Norm Macdonald’s Weekend Update episodes. The other, a picture of the comedian while hosting.
Of course, Norm Macdonald is sporting his famous sly smile in the Weekend Update photo. You can almost hear his voice as he delivers a punchline as only he can with his famously wry sense of humor.
Norm Macdonald’s History Making Hosting Gig
“One of the hardest parts about doing Update for me was not telling every joke the way I thought Norm would tell it,” comedian Seth Meyers has said of following Norm Macdonald as Weekend Updates host. “Like I had to beat Norm’s delivery out of me.”
Seth Meyers went on to note that he even told Macdonald about this struggle shortly after he took over the hosting gig.
“He said that ‘I’m so glad to hear you say that,'” the late-night talk show host remembered of the conversation he had with Norm Macdonald about his adjusting to making the Weekend Update segments his own.
Seth Meyers went on to remember how Norm Macdonald mentioned his own son did see a similarity between Meyers and himself.
“My son was watching you on Update and said to me ‘you talk just like Seth Meyers,’” Meyers recalled while holding back laughter.
“And he told me that when he said that, he said, ‘oh no! my son doesn’t know how time works!’”
A Great Loss
Fans of Norm Macdonald were devastated when news broke of the comedian’s death on September 14, 2021.
Macdonald’s passing came after a long battle with cancer, a battle that the actor and comedian kept private for years.
During his long career, Norm Macdonald found great success as both an actor and comedian. He starred in multiple films with big-time comedians such as Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, and Dave Chapelle.
Macdonald is well-known for his hilarious roles on film. However, he always found time to get back to his comedy roots; often touring regularly to perform in venues around the country.
The longtime comedian was well known, in fact, for being a big supporter of young comedians who were just beginning their own careers on the very same stages on which Macdonald had also started his own career, years before.
