Octavia Spencer Believes Ghost of Western Star Is Protecting Her

Octavia Spencer has been in the entertainment industry since the mid-90s. Since then, she’s proven herself to be an incredibly versatile actress. She masterfully starred in the touching, heartbreaking, and hilarious The Help. Additionally, she crushed in Hidden Figures. Spencer also took on the sinister role of Sue Ann in the thriller Ma and lent her voice to Dad-Dab in the most recent incarnation of the Dr. Dolittle story, Dolittle. Last Friday, she appeared on The Ellen Degeneres Show to discuss her latest film, Encounter, a sci-fi thriller about aliens.

While chatting with Ellen, Octavia Spencer revealed that she has strange encounters nearly every day. However, she wasn’t talking about aliens or creepily obsessed fans. Instead, the Hidden Figures star revealed that she lives with a ghost. She’s not afraid of the ghost, she sees him as her protector.

Unfortunately, Octavia Spencer didn’t reveal who she thinks haunts her house. However, she did say that he was a prominent actor in the western genre. “I grew up watching westerns,” Spencer said, “and I bought this house and it was owned by a guy who did westerns. So I must have been a fan of his. And I think he is my protector.”

Then, Octavia Spencer explained how her ghostly roommate protects her. “I love him because he kind of sorts out the bad people that shouldn’t be there. He runs them out.” When Ellen asked how the ghost does that. Spencer didn’t elaborate. Instead, she just said that some people don’t want to come back to her house. Others, though, find her home warm and welcoming. That, she said, is how she judges someone’s character. It’s almost a ghostly version of the “If my dog doesn’t like you, I don’t trust you” mindset.

Octavia Spencer Sets Ghostly Boundaries

Don’t think that Octavia Spencer is just fine with any old ghost wandering into her home. With a laugh, she laid down some ghostly ground rules. “I love my ghost. I just don’t want you bringing your ghost to my house. I don’t want anybody’s ghost thinking they can be friends with my ghost. Because my ghost can haunt me but he doesn’t haunt me. We have boundaries, ya know?”

Octavia Spencer’s ghost doesn’t haunt her most of the time. However, she did reveal that he starts acting a little “shady” if she leaves for a long period of time. “Like, the doors close. The lights go off when I turn them on.” So, it seems like the ghost likes having Octavia around and gets angry when she leaves. He shows her his frustration by exhibiting classic haunting behaviors. Spencer’s home might be welcoming to those who belong, but I wouldn’t suggest popping in for a visit right after she’s come home from a long shoot.
