Months after cancelling it, Paramount Network resumed production on the hit TV show Cops. First airing in 1989, the show follows police officers as they go on patrols. The show aired for 32 seasons. But the network cancelled the show following the death of George Floyd and national protests for police reform.

Production for ‘Cops” resumed in Washington

According to Fox News, officials said the show has resumed production in Spokane County, Washington and will be returning. That county previously hosted the show before.

“We have a longstanding relationship with Cops and Langley productions. And we are pleased they have decided to return, highlighting the outstanding work our Deputies provide to all of you,” the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

According to the sheriff’s office, film crews began riding with deputies last month. They will continue to film through October into the first week of November.

“Shows like Cops highlight the work of law enforcement,” Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich said. “They show, even for a few minutes, what the men and women out protecting our communities deal with day in and day out.  People need to see how quickly things can turn. The decisions that need to be made quickly, and how well Deputies and Officers adjust and respond appropriately.   They show the hard work and professionalism of law enforcement. Despite what some anti-law enforcement activists and those in the media want you to believe.”

However, the show doesn’t plan to air new episodes in the U.S. According to a spokesperson for Langley Productions, the network is filming episodes to fulfill international television contract agreements.

In June, the network cancelled the show in the wake of Floyd’s death. Video captured a police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on Floyd’s neck. Floyd later died as a result, setting off national protests for police reforms. The network decided to remove the program as a result of backlash online.

“‘Cops’ is not on the Paramount Network and we don’t have any current or future plans for it to return,” a Paramount Network spokesperson told Fox Business right after announcing the cancellation.
