David Cassidy was a wildly popular young actor and singer. Thanks to his role as Keith Partridge on “The Partridge Family,” he was beloved by countless fans. His popularity caused him to be in high demand, especially during the 1970s.
According to a report on CheatSheet.com, at the height of his popularity, Cassidy was swarmed by fans pretty much wherever he went. He had security with him; however, fans would tear at his clothes and stretch out to touch him. Other fans would even faint at seeing him.
Things got so bad that David Cassidy began to disguise himself or even hide in the trunk of a vehicle to avoid detection by fans. The singer wrote about this craziness in his memoir. The book is “C’Mon Get Happy: Fear and Loathing on the Partridge Family Bus.”
Even worse, a 14-year-old girl at a show in England was hurt. She then died a few days later. This, according to reports, was a burden to David Cassidy for years. It seems crazy, but the Australian government even took a stance against the singer. “After a few hundred fans got hurt at one of my Australian shows, a government official declared me a hazard to public health,” Cassidy wrote.
There was all this tragedy during Cassidy’s career and, in a dramatic twist, there was also a plot to kidnap him. According to the report, after filming an episode of “The Partridge Family,” the actor’s manager called him and told him to pack quickly.
FBI Comes to Protect Young Actor
Why? The FBI was coming to get him because there had been a verified kidnapping threat. The agents took the actor to a hotel to protect him. With the assistance of the Los Angeles Police Department, the FBI kept an eye on Cassidy everywhere he went. This included trips to the studio to film “The Partridge Family.” And, even trips to the bathroom.
“Two guys planned on kidnapping me, and hoped to collect a multimillion-dollar ransom from my family and Screen Gems-Columbia Pictures,” Cassidy wrote.
Kidnapping Threat Ends Romance Between David Cassidy & Meredith Baxter
A month passed before law enforcement felt David Cassidy was no longer in danger of being kidnapped. During that time, the young actor was forced to be out of touch with the woman he was dating.
Meredith Baxter acted as a guest star on “The Partridge Family” during its run. David Cassidy first met her while she was appearing on his popular show. Baxter’s most popular television role on “Family Ties” where she starred as Elyse Keaton. Cassidy fell head over heels in love with Baxter, according to his autobiography.
“I really carried a serious torch for her,” Cassidy said about Baxter. “I never told anybody about it except Susan Dey, Shirley (Jones), and a couple of other friends.”
The couple had only been together for one month when the FBI began to protect Cassidy. Because he couldn’t reach out to Baxter, she moved on to another guy. That man was David Birney.
“It broke my heart,” Cassidy wrote of seeing Baxter with another man.
