Sad news for fans of singer-drummer Phil Collins as he is no longer able to play drums because of his ongoing health issues.

Collins, in an interview with Fox News, said he’s getting ready to go out on tour with Genesis. Phil Collins has been a longtime member of the band along with Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford.

The singer, known for his classic rock hit “In The Air Tonight,” said his son Nicholas will take over as drummer for Genesis.

Phil Collins Continues To Deal With Spinal Area Nerve Damage

Phil Collins, now 70 years old, has been dealing with the effects of nerve damage in his spinal area. He suffered the injury, which affects his vertebrae, in 2007. It’s been so bad that Collins has been forced to sit in a wheelchair in public.

Collins made the shocking announcement regarding drum playing on BBC Breakfast on Thursday morning.

“No. I’d love to, but you know, I mean, I can barely hold a stick with this hand,” Phil Collins said. “So there are certain physical things that get in the way.”

More than likely, this is the final tour for Genesis. Collins said that it is a way of “putting it to bed,” meaning his time with the band.

Sadly, Phil Collins also believes that this is his final go-round in public as a musician.

“Yes, well you know, you say things,” he told the BBC Breakfast hosts. “I mean, we’re all men of our age and I think to some extent yeah, I think it probably is putting it to bed.

“I think, yeah, just generally for me, I don’t know if I want to go out on the road anymore,” Collins said.

Famed Drummer Said All of His Success Was ‘A Stroke Of Luck’

Besides “In The Air Tonight,” some of his other hits include “Easy Lover” with singer Philip Bailey. When asked about his career, Phil Collins simply said it was “all a stroke of luck, it’s a complete accident.”

“I’ve never purposely crafted a song to be a hit my life,” Collins said.

While that may be true in his eyes, fans all over the world still love Phil Collins and his music. In 2010, Collins was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis. The drumbeats that he provided on many of that group’s signature songs, as well as his own hits, put him among the greats in rock music.

He’s been getting out in public and singing. Many times, though, Phil Collins has had to walk on stage with a cane to help him. He goes and sits in a chair in front of a drum set. Then he would sing or chat with the audience.
