This was the first time Drummond spoke out about her brother’s death since her sister Betsy announced it on Instagram. The “Pioneer Woman” posted several childhood photos of herself and Michael in the Facebook post, showing the incredible bond between the siblings. We also see one photo of Michael as an adult.
“It isn’t possible to sum up the life of someone as perfectly wonderful as my brother Michael, so right now I won’t try. He was seventeen months older than me, my first friend and buddy, and I’m so grateful for over 50 years of photos and memories. Please pray for my parents, whose devotion to Mike was boundless, and who will feel this loss most acutely. Michael Smith, you were everything,” Ree Drummond wrote.
Thousands of people shared their grief and condolences with the “Pioneer Woman.” But a local Bartlesville, Oklahoma, resident who knew Michael also paid a touching tribute to him on Facebook.
“It is with a sad heart to announce that Bartlesville Icon, Michael Smith, has gone to heaven,” wrote Dan Dalton. “He is well known by almost everyone in Bartlesville and other parts of the state and known nationally due to Ree Drummond his famous sister. It is nice to know that he went fast and did not suffer. God has been very good to my favorite buddy. I know he is making lots of new friends in heaven.”
Dalton told local news station KTUL how Michael loved to visit him at the ambulance and fire stations in town. He also religiously attended every basketball, football, and baseball game in Bartlesville. The local outlet also implied that Michael may have been disabled.
‘Pioneer Woman’ Ree Drummond’s Sister Announces Brother’s Passing
Betsy Smith, Ree Drummond’s sister, initially announced the passing of their brother Michael on Instagram. Betsy shared a heartwarming picture of the two along with a sweet caption.
“We lost Michael, my sweet and wonderful brother, this last weekend. He was one of a kind, and he will be missed by so many people who loved him. I’m very thankful for his life, the connections he made, and his caring, fun, and independent spirit. Love you forever, Mikey,” Betsy wrote.
The “Pioneer Woman’s” sister also commented on local resident Dan Dalton’s post about Michael.
“Dan Dalton, thank you for your loyal and supportive friendship with Michael for so many years. What a gift of happiness you gave him, knowing he could count on you and that you were always there for him. Words will never be adequate to express the gratitude our family has for you and the entire community that loved, helped, and enjoyed Michael,” Betsy commented.
At this time, the cause of death has not been revealed.
