Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, has died at the age of 99.

According to the Associated Press, the Buckingham Palace officials released a state regarding his passing.

“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” the palace said. “His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”

The publication also reports that he was in the hospital earlier this year for a pre-existing heart condition before being released on March 16. Prince Philip then returned to his home, Windsor Castle.

Prince Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, wed Elizabeth in 1947. Furthermore, he was the longest-serving consort in British history. In 2017, he retired from public engagements after serving more than 20,000 of them.

Prince Philip, a Member of Greek Royal Family, Passes Away

The Duke of Edinburgh was a member of the Greek royal family. As a matter of fact, in 1921 he was born on the Greek island of Corfu. He and his family left Greece when he was a baby. Philip then attended school in France and the U.K. In 1939, Prince Philip entered the Royal Nacy. He served in the Second World War with British forces. He was appointed Admiral of the Sea Cadet Corps, Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Cadet Force and Air Commodore-in-Chief of the Air Training Corps in 1952. Then again he was promoted to Admiral of the Fleet and appointed Field Marshal and Marshal of the Royal Air Force.

Prince Philip was a dedicated sportsman. He especially loved country pursuits, AP reports. He had four children with Queen Elizabeth – Prince Charles; Princess Anne; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex. He’s survived by eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
