For Ann Presley, the mother of Priscilla Presley, one of the last things she heard as she was dying was the deep, rhythmic, and soulful voice of Elvis Presley.
Priscilla Presley and her family said goodbye to Ann leading up to her death on August 2. She was 95 years old when she passed away.
Priscilla Presley Plays Elvis Gospel Music to Mother
In an interview with People, Priscilla Presley opened up about what it was like to say goodbye to her mother. She said she had a priest come in and give Ann her last rites about four days prior to her passing away. She said that the priest relayed to her, “Remember Priscilla, hearing is the last thing that goes, so say positive things for her spirit.”
She took this to heart when she began playing her ex-husband and iconic singer Elvis Presley’s music on her deathbed. Specifically, she played some of his gospel music. Elvis was a devout Christian who passionately recorded gospel music during the height of his career.
“Every night I’d play Elvis’ gospel music to her — ‘In the Garden,” Amazing Grace,’ ‘How Great Thou Art. All the songs she loved. She was basically in a coma, but she would just touch my finger so I knew that she was there. She was listening,” Priscilla Presley told the magazine.
Despite the coma, Ann was still able to signal that she was listening, according to Priscilla’s account of it all. She was right by her mother all the way up until she passed. “She had a little smile on her face, and then I felt this air coming from her. I never experienced that before — the actual feeling of the spirit coming out of the body,” she shared.
Priscilla Honors Her Late Mother
Priscilla Presley also shared a photo of her mother on Instagram in front of a beautiful bouquet of flowers. This is how she announced that she had unfortunately passed away. She wrote, “I am heartbroken. My beautiful mother passed today. She was the light of our lives. She never wanted any attention on herself. Her children were her everything. May you Rest In Peace mom. You will always be with us.”
The Presley family has dealt with a lot of loss throughout their lives. Her father passed away two years ago. Elvis died in 1977 very suddenly when he was only 42 years old. In 2020, Priscilla’s grandson Benjamin Keough died at the age of 27 from suicide. She also has three other grandchildren from her daughter, Lisa Marie. That includes popular actress Riley Keough and twins Finley and Harper Lockwood.
In the wake of the loss of her mother, Priscilla is also looking to give back. She will be attending the Kruse GWS Auctions on September 4. There will be Elvis memorabilia auctioned off as well as a private lunch with Presley. Some of the proceeds from the auction will go to the Dream Foundation, which helps to support terminally ill adults as well as their families.
It’s meant to honor her recently deceased mother amidst a couple of years full of tragedy for the family.
