Hollywood icon Robert Redford has lost two sons in his lifetime, but his two daughters continue to thrive. Put faces to names and discover the lives of this legendary actor’s four children.

To fans and Hollywood buffs alike, Robert Redford needs no introduction. From Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, to reaching a whole new generation of fans as S.H.I.E.L.D. mastermind Alexander Pierce in Marvel’s Captain America & Avengers films, Redford holds a career most actors will only ever dream of.

Despite his accomplishments, however, few know that Redford is a dedicated family man who’s fathered four children. Despite his Oscars, Cecil B. DeMille Award, Golden Globes, and even a Presidential Medal of Freedom – it is his children that Redford continues to regard as his greatest achievement to this day.

In fact, Robert Redford was married to historian Lola Van Wagenen for three decades. During these nearly thirty years, the couple’s long union was full of incredible ups – like being blessed with four children – and horribly tragic downs which began with losing their firstborn.

As such, let’s take a look at their four children in order of their birth and discover the lives of Robert Redford’s four children.

Scott Anthony Redford (1958-1958)

Soon within their marriage, Redford and Lola would be eager to start their family. One year on, Lola became pregnant with their first child: Scott Anthony Redford.

Tragically, his life would end in just two months after passing away from SIDS. The horrible ailment, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, is also known as cot death or crib death. SIDS is used to describe the sudden, unexplainable death of any child less than one year of age. For a baby’s death to be labeled with the syndrome, the death must remain unexplained after thorough investigation and autopsy.

Robert Redford’s second child, Shauna Redford, was born November 15, 1960. She did not take to film like her father and other siblings, but she would become a highly-successful artist in her own right.

A prolific painter to this day, Shauna is also married to journalist Eric Schlosser. The two married in 1985 and have given Redford two grandchildren: Mica and Conor.

Glamour Path notes that Shauna Redford’s net worth is an incredible $2 million through her professional career as a painter. This is of her own success, and does not take into account her father’s Hollywood wealth. “Her enormous income is the result of her painting style that gets connected with the buyer,” the trade cites.

David James Redford (1962 – 2020)

You’re not seeing double. That’s Redford and his second son, James Redford, at a screening in NYC, 2011. In addition to bearing a striking resemblance to his father, James would also follow in his footsteps, finding great success as a documentary filmmaker and activist.

Together, the father & son would found The Redford Center in 2005 to “impact-driven film and media to galvanize the movement toward environmental justice, protection and repair,” their website states.

Tragically, Redford would lose his second son in 2020 after James lost his battle with liver cancer. He was just 58.

His work included Paper Tigers for Amazon, Happening: A Clean Energy Revolution, and Watershed, an exploration of the new future for water in an increasingly dry Western U.S.

Robert Redford, too, remains an activist. One of his latest works as producer, Public Trust, “offers a condemning indictment of the Trump Administration’s record on protecting public lands from private interests.”

Moreover, CNN cites how passionate James “Jamie” Redford was about the work he and his father did:

“I just love meeting people and hearing their stories,” he tells the trade. “Being in the documentary filmmaking world ensures your life is one long continuing education course. You’re constantly learning more — not only about topics but also about human nature. And then to be able to apply a love of sound and vision into how you shape that content — that’s the icing on the cake.”

James is survived by his wife Kyle and their two children: Dylan and Lena.

Amy Hart Redford (1970 – Present)

The youngest of Robert Redford’s four children, Amy Redford would also follow in her father and brother’s footsteps. More specifically, she would be the only of his children to pursue acting as he did.

Her acting career began studying dramatic arts at San Francisco State University. From there, she would go on to make dozens of television and film appearances. Among them are: HBO’s Sex and the City and The SopranosMaid in ManhattanSunshine Cleaning, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

If Amy looks familiar, it’s because the list above is just the tip of the iceberg. She’s also appeared in Law & Order: Criminal IntentCry Funny Happy,  The Last Confederate: The Story of Robert Adams,  Mergers & Acquisitions, and many more titles.

Later in her career, Amy would join her father & brother James in directing. She both directed and produced 2008’s The Guitar starring Saffron Burrows. In addition, she would produce Professor Marston & the Wonder Women, and documentary Aperture.
