When the beloved actor Robin Williams died by suicide in 2014, his millions of fans were extremely saddened by his loss. And, while their mourning was justified, their pain did not compare to what those who were closest to him must have experienced.
Williams was 64 years old at the time of his death. He was suffering from Lewy body dementia – neurodegenerative disease.
One of the people closest to him was his son, Zak Williams. And, on the day that would have been his famous father’s 70th birthday (Wednesday, July 21), Zak took to social media to honor Robin Williams, according to Today.
In his Instagram post, Zak shares his thoughts about the legacy Robin Williams left behind. And, what a legacy it was! From his early days in “Mork and Mindy” to his many comedic roles in films such as “Good Morning, Vietnam,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and “The Birdcage,” to his Oscar-winning role in “Good Will Hunting,” Williams will never be forgotten.
Here’s the beautiful message his son shared with the world: “Dad, on what would be your 70th birthday, I would want you to know that your incredible spirit lives within us. Our family will be celebrating you and your memory today. We miss you and love you always!”
Along with the message, Zak shared a black-and-white photo of his father, Robin Williams. Check it out below.
Robin Williams’ Son Has Been Open About Mourning for His Father In the Past
Zak Williams has been open about how he felt about his father in the past. For example, in 2021 he talked with Prince Harry and Oprah Winfrey about Robin Williams. He did so on their Apple TV+ show, “The Me You Can’t See.”
During their conversation, Zak opened up about how it was difficult to mourn his father while so many people who did not know him were grieving the actor at the same time.
“From my end it was hard to separate initially the process of privately grieving versus sharing the grieving with the general public, both the American public and the world,” Zak Williams also said.
The time after Robin Williams passed away was difficult for his son, Zak, who is now a father himself.
“I found myself extremely emotionally dysregulated and feeling vulnerable and exposed when I wasn’t ready to be vulnerable,” he said. “And that created a major challenge for me,” Zak also shared.
Zak isn’t the only child Hollywood icon Robin Williams left behind. Zak is the child of Williams and Valerie Velardi. The famous actor later married Marsha Garces. They had two children, Zelda Williams and Cody Williams. When Robin Williams passed away in 2014, he was married to Susan Schneider Williams.
