Rosie O’Donnell has given her support for Ellen DeGeneres, saying she has “compassion” for the fellow comedian talk-show host. The comedian spoke to Busy Phillips on the actress’s podcast, about her stance on the Ellen scandal.

DeGeneres has hit headlines for allegations of toxic work environment on the set of her famous talk show. Many celebrities, including Katy Perry, Sofia Vergara, Kevin Hart, and now, Rosie O’Donnell, have jumped to the comedian’s defense.

“You can’t fake your essence,” O’Donnell told Phillips on Wednesday. She goes on to say she has “compassion for Ellen” even though she “hear(s) the stories.” O’Donnell believes some of the reactions are due to Ellen’s delivery, which can be awkward at times. “I think she has some social awkwardness,” the comedian claims. She added her beliefs about Ellen come from knowing her for many years. “I have my own kind of history with her,” O’Donnell explained to Phillips.

The former talk-show host can relate to Ellen about the intensity of hosting a show. She understands the rush one gets when performing for millions. O’Donnell explains on the podcast that hosting “wasn’t like anything close to real life.” She says, “you get a mass adulation from the multitudes every day like a shot of heroin in your arm,’ explaining, “it’s a lot to take in.” Because of their shared experience with similar careers, O’Donnell feels she can understand how things may be misconstrued or overanalyzed.

When it comes to why she has never appeared on the show, O’Donnell says she’s scared of Ellen’s pranks. DeGeneres is infamous for surprising celebrity guests with jump scares on her show. “You know how Ellen surprises everyone?” O’Donnell references, “I’ve never done that show because I’m terrified she’s going to scare me and give me a heart attack.”
