Sam Elliott is one of the best. It’s hard to find someone who doesn’t like him or his acting. His smooth drawl is perhaps the best thing in Hollywood right now. His voice is right up there with David Attenborough.

Nonetheless, there are certainly fans of his who have watched every single movie he’s ever done. Others, however, only know a few movies of his. A common theme is that all of his movies, in the eyes of many, is that he is fantastic.

During an interview in 2019 with Do You Remember, Sam Elliott was asked about his movies. In particular, the interview wanted to address whether or not there were lesser-known movies of his that he wished people had watched.

His answer is amazing. It is hard to find a person who is more satisfied with their work in any industry. For an actor, especially, that’s hard to find.

“I’ve done films over the years that basically no one saw,” Elliott said. “I’m thankful that some of them haven’t been seen. But I’ve been fortunate in that I’ve been in a lot of films that a lot of people saw.”

More importantly, he noted that his work has never been about his legacy. Instead, he said, “It’s about the people I’m working with at the time and just going in and enjoying the process. It’s hard work, but it’s a creative, artistic process. And if you can’t enjoy that, then you’re going about it wrong.”

Sam Elliott Has a Short and Sweet List of His Favorite Westerns

There are only a few Westerns that could fit the bill for Sam Elliott. He has a discerning eye for this type of movie. Perhaps it is because he has been in a handful of top-of-the-line ones.

“There’s a simplicity to that form that has always spoken to me,” the Western icon also noted in this same interview.

Sam Elliott also added that “a pretty well-defined morality to the characters: the good, the bad … not a lot of gray areas. It’s either one or the other in the stuff that’s spoken to me.”

As many Western movie fans will know, actors who spend a lot of time in the genre typically stick to the same type of movie once they’ve found what they like. That being said, though, there is still a wide range of movies that they can act in.

So, Sam Elliott’s favorite Westerns of all-time coincide well with the roles he’s had over the years. But, which of the movies in the entire genre are his favorite?

The Searchers would be up there,” the famous actor said.

And, as for the other two on the list? Red River and Shane. Both are incredible movies. This author, for one, holds Shane in the highest regard.
