Sam Elliott hasn’t let his four decades of success in Hollywood get to his head or boost his ego. At least, not too much.

The stoic modern-day cowboy takes life as it comes. When he was nominated for his first Oscar for his chilling role in “A Star is Born,” all Sam Elliott had to say was “It’s about fu***ng time.”

He may be humble, but he does still know his worth. His career has gotten him roles like “The Big Lebowski,” “Road House,” and “The Hero.” Elliott is also one of the few actors that could have such a seamless transition to commercial work. His deep and meticulous voice is the star of beer, beef, and car commercials. He even got to be Smokey the Bear.

Sam Elliott on Staying Humble

Amidst decades of success and droves of mustache-obsessed Western fans, Sam Elliott is still just an ordinary guy. He likes to spend a month out of every year in Eugene, Oregon, where he can just enjoy the small-town life.

As it turns out, even as a highly successful actor, Elliott has no problem getting his hands dirty.

In an interview with Vulture from 2015, Elliott talked about how he stays out of the craziness that is Hollywood. “We stay out of town, and we don’t get in too deep. We don’t believe all the sh*t in the rags. And we work hard. Katharine and I have a lot in common. We’ve got a 30-year-old daughter [Cleo] that we’re deeply in love with and still incredibly close to. Life’s good. We live in Malibu and have horses and dogs and cats and chickens. We shovel sh*t, man. That keeps you humble.”

Sam Elliott and Katherine Ross met in 1978 and got married in 1984. The two originally met on the set of the horror movie, “The Legacy.” The couple has been married since and has one daughter, Cleo Rose. He credits the longevity of their marriage to them being a more reserved Hollywood couple. They rarely do interviews together and generally keep to themselves.

The couple has been living in their seaside ranch in Malibu since the 1970s.

Elliott as a Hero in Oregon

Besides his property in Miami, Elliott also maintains a property up in Willamette Valley, Oregon.

His scarce appearances there has been quite the excitement for locals over the years. Elliott moved to Portland with his family when he was 13. He then got a degree from Clark College in Vancouver. Despite leaving the state long ago, Elliott has always felt a lasting connection that he continues to act on.

“My mom’s house is still (in Portland), and we still own it. I still spend a lot of time there. I’ve got a place in the Willamette Valley, down near Eugene. I’m ultimately hoping to move back to Oregon,” Elliott said to Oregon Live in 2017.

Despite his love for the small town, Elliott does have a harder time getting around. That’s mostly because of his bustling career in things like “The Ranch,” “The Hero,” and “A Star is Born.” He often gets flagged down by people for selfies, which he always accepts.

“I’m gonna go from here to Jerry’s (Home Improvement), and I’m not looking forward to it. I like Jerry’s. I got nothin’ against Jerry’s, but all of a sudden moving around town is not as easy as it was,” Elliott said to The Register-Guard.

To Elliott, sometimes fame is just something that gets in the way of him going to the home improvement store.
