Actor Sam Elliott has some members of his own family who were heroes in their own right. He believes the word is getting tiresome.

In a 2017 interview with Sarasota Scene Magazine, Elliott is asked about members of his family fighting at the Alamo. He’s quick to correct the interviewer’s error.

“Let me tell you, it was really the Battle of San Jacinto,” Elliott said. “I had a great-great grandfather…I think his last name was Pope and I think he was a surgeon. That’s what I recall.”

Next, the interviewer asks, in the context of World War II veterans, what the definition of “hero” is to him.

“I’ll tell you, the word hero to me is so overused,” he said. “You know? The heroic people to me are clearly the ones that have made the sacrifice for their country I think more than others.”

Interviewer Gus Mollasis agrees with Sam Elliott, who follows up and said, “I knew a bunch of them, and I lost a couple of them this year.”

Sam Elliott Picks Projects By How Much He’ll Love Doing Them

When it comes to work, Elliott is a bit of an enigma. He only tries to pick projects that he would love to do, not because of how much money they’d bring into his life.

“My security comes from the fact that I’ve never done a job for money,” Sam Elliott told The Guardian in a 2017 interview. Elliott adds that his commercial work provides him with some security, plus the freedom to pick and choose acting roles.

Commercial work allows Sam Elliott to avoid “the dramatic stuff, or the theatrical stuff … the acting work” he didn’t want to do.

One movie in recent years that Elliott had a role in was “A Star Is Born,” the remake with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in the lead roles. Apparently, Elliott, who is a big fan of Lady Gaga’s music, hit it off with the singer-actress.

Elliott Admits To Being Big Lady Gaga Fan Even Before Making ‘A Star Is Born’

While making the movie, Elliott didn’t call her Lady Gaga too much. He preferred to call her by her real first name, Stefani.

“I called her Gaga one time,” Elliott said in a 2019 interview with Deadline. “It might’ve been at the Governor’s Awards, or somewhere in front of an audience. I referred to her as Gaga and she said, ‘You wanted to call me Stefani!’ Backstage I said, ‘I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it.'”

He even referred to himself as a “proud father” watching Lady Gaga, er Stefani, work on the film.

“That’s how I felt,” he said. “That’s how I feel in some ways. She’s two years younger than my daughter.”

Sam Elliott has one child, a daughter, with his wife, actress Katherine Ross. They’ve been married since 1984 and live in Malibu, Calif.
