Sammy Hagar Says He Can’t Respect Former Van Halen Singer David Lee Roth

For years fans of Van Halen have argued over which iteration is the best. From Sammy Hagar die-hards to David Lee Roth fanatics and everything in between. The saga is one of the more interesting pieces of drama in rock history. Whether or not fans prefer one over the other, one thing is clear. The two do not like each other. At all.

The legendary Sammy Hagar sat down with The Washington Post to talk Van Halen and other topics. Among the bits of information that Hagar shared was how he feels about David Lee Roth. Roth, Van Halen’s first vocalist, is known for being a little more comedic and performative in a different way. Hagar discussed the differences between himself and Roth with the Post.

During the interview, the question came right out. “David Lee Roth…I get the sense that your distaste for him as a human is genuine and that you were never able to broker a peace…am I right about this?” To which the Van Halen singer replied, “Well, we’re different kinds of people…I’m a real family kind of guy.” It didn’t stop there, either.

“I’m not trying to be a celebrity and trying to be a big star – I’m about being a good enough artist that they accept me in the celebrity world. That’s the way I approach my whole thing, and he does it all differently,” Hagar told the interviewer. As he went on about Roth and his approach to things. It got a bit personal. “It’s [Roth’s approach] a whole different style, and I don’t really respect the way he does it,” Hagar mentioned multiple times that Roth’s singing abilities aren’t up to snuff anymore. The interview laid out what many Van Halen fans had suspected and known for quite some time.

Van Halen After Eddie

While there was hope a reunion tour could be put together for all Van Halen alumni, that is gone since the passing of Eddie Van Halen last October. After the master guitar player passed from throat cancer, plans for a full reunion tour vanished. Eddie’s son, Wolfgang is now playing solo material. Sammy Hagar is playing with his band, The Circle, and David Lee Roth is doing his own thing as well.

Eddie Van Halen’s son is keeping his father’s spirit alive. Since he was a teenager, Wolfgang has been performing with Van Halen off and on. Now that he is performing his own solo music he is out on tour with Guns N’ Roses. Not only does the young Van Halen play guitar and sing on his solo project, he plays every instrument on the album. Although his father’s name surely helps him get into doors, the talent is there and the success speaks for itself. Although a Van Halen reunion is possible, don’t expect it to happen any time soon. And don’t expect to see Hagar or Roth in the same room.
