Sammy Hagar Opens up About Reconciling With Eddie Van Halen ‘Earlier This Year’

Former Van Halen lead singer Sammy Hagar says he and guitar legend Eddie Van Halen were on good terms before the latter passed away this week.

Members of the famous rock band often had a tumultuous relationship at times. In a letter to SiriusXM Radio host Howard Stern, Hagar described his relationship with Van Halen., according to Fox News.

“I reached out one last time last week and when he didn’t respond, I figured it was a matter of time,” he says. “I would love you to share that Eddie and I had been texting, and it’s been a love fest since we started communicating earlier this year.”

According to Billboard, the band’s sales rose 6,000 percent on the day Eddie Van Halen died earlier this week.

Widely considered one of the greatest rock guitarist of all time, Van Halen passed away on Tuesday at the age of 65. He long battled throat cancer which was the cause of his death.

Hagar was one of many music industry icons to pay tribute to Van Halen upon hearing his death. He took to social media to express sorrow of his former bandmate’s passing.

“Heartbroken and speechless,” he tweets. “My love to the family.”

The tweet shows a photo of Hagar and Van Halen aboard a plane. Both of them are smiling a looking like they enjoy the company of the other.

In his letter to Stern, Hagar says he and Eddie smoothed over their relationship and texted each other often.

“We both agreed not to tell anyone because of all the rumors it would stir up about a reunion and we both knew that wasn’t going to happen,” he says. “But he also didn’t want anyone to know about his health.”
