‘SEAL Team’: AJ Buckley Emotionally Broke Down Why Quinn is a ‘Dream Role’

He took on the role of Sonny Quinn on the hit series SEAL Team in 2017, and AJ Buckley has admitted that he isn’t taking the character for granted. 

During a 2019 interview with Talk Nerdy With Us, the SEAL Team star revealed why Quinn is his dream role. “The show itself follows the tier-one operators, these elite group of Navy SEALS that exist over here. They are the best of the best,” Buckley explained.

Buckley also shared what he loved about SEAL Team is when he first read the pilot.

“There’s this real human element to these guys that have to go do this as a job. What they choose to go and do and sacrifice.”

The actor then shares that SEAL Team really goes deep into the home life of how families are affected by military obligations. It also shares how military personnel is affected coming home, along with the PTSD and the support that they need. “It really opens up. We’re the first military drama that has gone into that side of it – I fell in love with it.”

While also chatting with the Talk Nerdy With Us crew, AJ Buckley shared more details about his acting career prior to signing up for SEAL Team.

“It hasn’t been an easy road by any sense,” Buckley admitted. He also revealed that he lived out of his car for more than a year. “But to be honest, I wouldn’t trade any of those moments. For they have defined who I am today as an artist, a husband, a father, and a man.”

Despite his struggles at the beginning, the SEAL Team star shared that he has had so much “self-belief” as well as a dream that was such a burning fire inside of him that none of the obstacles intimidated him. He also had an incredible support system from his parents. “If it wasn’t for their love and emotional support, I would not be where I am today.”

Along with starring in SEAL Team, Buckley has also appeared in other hit series, including The X-Files and Supernatural. He was also in the film Disturbing Behavior by David Nutter.  He even gave Nutter credit for getting his parents to move to LA and finding an agent as his character was testing really high. 

In regards to characters he truly wants to play, the SEAL Team castmate declared he has a keen interest in playing a John McClane from the Die Hard franchise and Maximus from Gladiator. “Last but not least, on my actor’s bucket list would be to play a character of the Marvel or DC franchise.”
