‘SEAL Team’: Why AJ Buckley Shocked Show’s Writers When He Showed Up to Audition

Over the course of three years, AJ Buckley went from out of shape to the best shape of his life and 10% body fat. From then on his perspective and work ethic changed. The doors to the roles that he had always wanted to play started opening and people would go, “oh you’ve changed”.

A few years later, he got a phone call about an audition for the SEAL Team. The writer, Ben Cavell, who AJ Buckley worked with on Justified sent him a message saying that he’d written this role with him in mind. The last time he saw him, he was out of shape.

“What’s happened to you?!” said the casting director as he went into the audition. AJ Buckley replied with “I’ve been working out”. They followed to say that he looked great. A week later, he found out that he got the role of a lifetime.

It is a challenge to pursue acting. One challenge that he had to overcome were living out of his car for a year plus. He thought a lot about going back home and getting a 9-to-5 job, but he stayed motivated through it all. He has now made a name for himself and inspires many of his fans to do the same.

AJ Buckley’s Background

AJ Buckley began his acting career when he lived in Ireland. He remarked on his first ever performance of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” with his parents. He told the interviewer that he remembers turning around to the audience and asking his mum and dad what the people on stage were. They told him “actors” and from then on, his dream of being an actor lives on.

It wasn’t just live performances that influenced his love for acting, though. In fact, he fell in loves with movies such as the ‘Wizard of Oz”. They moved to Vancouver, Canada where he was able to try playing a variety of sports and other activities, but the images of him starring in movies or on stage kept swarming through his head. Vancouver has a huge film community where he started auditioning. He put in more effort than the other people to see what the set was like and fell in love with it.

Advice for Aspiring Actors

Everything is always going to be a challenge, no matter what you want to accomplish. It’s important to create your own path. “You have to put the work in. There’s no easier way to put it, but to commit and go after it,” he said in an interview. “There’s going to be good days and hard days, but the challenges will only make you stronger.”
