Among the little-known facts about Shania Twain: She wrote a Britney Spears song.
The country singer-turned-pop star wrote the song “Don’t Let Me Be the Last to Know” with her husband at the time, Robert John “Mutt” Lange. Spears would later record the song and include it on her 2000 album, Oops! I Did It Again.
But Twain and Spears don’t remember the collaboration the same way, apparently.
Spears told MTV in 2000 that Twain wasn’t home when she went over to the couple’s home to record the song with Lange. And she said they must have written the song especially for her, because the lyrics are too youthful for Twain.
Twain has a different take on the process.
“We didn’t work together on that song,” she explained to Fuse TV several years ago. “It was just a writing thing that I did on the side. She was working with my ex-husband in the studio. And I got to, you know, say hello while she was in the studio, because it was at our home.”
Twain the Songwriter
“She was very sweet,” Twain added. “And it was a great experience just to get to know her on a really just behind-the-scenes level a little bit. And it was obviously an honor to have her record some of my songwriting… But yeah, Britney she did a beautiful job with the song.”
Twain’s singing made her famous. But she continued her songwriting even through Lyme disease and dysphonia, a vocal cord disorder, which led to two open-throat surgeries, UPI reported.
“I love writing for other people,” Twain said. “In fact, when I believed that I was never gonna be able to sing again myself, I thought, ‘Well, on the positive side… I will get a lot of pleasure writing for other singers and hearing other singers sing the songs that I’ve written. And I’ll just keep writing, and I’ll still be able to hear my music.’”
