Smash Mouth Lead Singer Steve Harwell Isn’t With the Band Right Now Due to Health Issues

Fans of the rock band Smash Mouth grew anxious recently with the news that lead singer Steve Harwell was no longer performing with the band.

Harwell’s absence from recent Smash Mouth live shows led to speculation that there could be more to the story. This is not the case, according to the band and Harwell should be rejoining the band soon. Harwell, who has been with the band since its inception in 1994, is battling a health condition and that is the reason for his absence. The Smash Mouth lead singer is reportedly on the mend and will be back up in front of a microphone in short order.

Harwell was forced off the stage due to problematic heart issues. He suffers from cardiomyopathy, a disease where the heart muscle becomes enlarged and weak, making it difficult to pump blood. The Smash Mouth singer has had the condition since 2015 and has forced him to take a few breaks from touring with the band. He had a close call in 2017 when he was rushed to the hospital due to his heart condition. With medications and additional measures, Harwell is able to adequately manage the condition.

Smash Mouth is currently using a fill-in singer as they continue with their live performances. According to a TMZ report, Harwell hopes to be back with his bandmates as early as this week. He is hooting to return this Thursday when Smash Mouth takes the stage at the Jackson, Mississippi, State Fair.

Smash Mouth Singer’s Absence Leads to Rumors

Fans of the band took to social media to share their thoughts on the matter and speculate on what might be the case.

One rumor floating around in cyberspace was that Smash Mouth was firing Harwell and auditioning new singers. On a variety of social media sites, music fans searched for answers as to why the lead singer wasn’t with the band.

“Is it true that you guys are getting a new singer?” a Smash Mouth fan asks aloud. “How would one go about getting an audition?”

“Hey Smash Mouth,” another social media user writes. “Did y’all replace your singer and not say anything?”

Thankfully for the band and their fans — the answer to that question is a big “no” and nor do they have plans to.
