Sofia Vergara has joined other celebrities in defending Ellen Degeneres’ character amidst the talk show’s toxic work environment scandal.
The ‘Modern Family’ actress took to Twitter on Friday after a video compilation of Ellen mocking her accent went viral. The video, which was posted on August 12, now has 7 million views. User @ruefilms posted the edited video with the caption, “Ellen is so racist.”
To clarify the context of the viral video, Vergara posted to Twitter a longer clip on Friday. In her caption, she defends Degeneres. Vergara clarified for her 8.7 million followers, that she “was never a victim.” On the contrary, she explained, she was “having fun” and “always in on the joke.”
The video Vergara posted shows the two joking around about a Cover Girl commercial shoot. In the clip, they humorously give each other a hard time, neither looking uncomfortable with the banter.
Degeneres does make a joke about Vergara’s accent in the tweeted video. She comments that the actress and model had difficulty pronouncing the words. “They give her the hardest lines too because we have to describe what’s in the CoverGirl makeup and she has such a hard time pronouncing any of the ingredients,” she said.
Vergara laughed and fired back: “I think because you are much more famous than me and older than me so they give you priority.”
The tweet adds Sofia Vergara to the growing list of celebrities who have come to the talk-show host’s defense. Namely, Kevin Hart, Katy Perry, and Ellen’s wife, Portia De Rossi have all been vocal in their support of Degeneres.
