Years of being a Hollywood stuntman took their toll on the body of Sons of Anarchy star William Lucking. He suffered from chronic pain for years before his death.

Sons of Anarchy fans will always remember William Lucking as the rugged old-school biker Piney Winston. Lucking passed away back on October 18 at his home in Las Vegas. He was 80 years old. But there is no doubt that Piney was one of the fan-favorite characters in the show. In addition to his role on Sons, Lucking is known for his movie roles in films like The Magnificent Seven Ride and The Rundown. He also portrayed Col. Lynch in the first season of the 1980s television show The A-Team.

However, William Lucking has been in the industry since the late-1960s, early-1970s. All in all, Lucking has made appearances in more than 25 movies and more than 30 television shows. So, there is no denying that he was an experienced actor. But we are just finding out from Lucking’s wife, costume designer Sigrid Insull Lucking, that the actor suffered numerous injuries during his acting career.

‘Sons of Anarchy’ Star Suffered from Years of Chronic Pain

Sigil Lucking told TMZ that there was one incident during the filming of Harold and Maude where her late husband was involved in a motorcycle accident. Lucking fell more than 80 feet off of a bridge. As a result, he was forced into a body cast for weeks. That was not the only accident he was involved in, though. Lucking was a stuntman for several Westerns and action movies, and he fell off a lot of horses during that time. That led to all kinds of various broken bones.

Before it was all said and down, Lucking had had two knee replacement surgeries, a back surgery, shoulder surgery, and more. And for the last year of his life, the Sons of Anarchy star was confined to a wheelchair. He was also having breathing problems and had a failing heart. Fans of the show probably remember seeing the actor hooked up to oxygen as the series went on.

“He just gave up,” Lucking’s wife said. “He was tired and in a lot of pain.”

Lucking’s Co-Stars Pay Tribute

In the wake of his death, several of William Lucking’s Sons of Anarchy co-stars have paid tribute to him. One of the first to do so was Kim Coates, the actor who played the role of Alexander “Tig” Trager in the show.

“Never ever gonna forget this guy,” Coates wrote in a Tweet. “Billy broke the mold of pretty much everything he did and accomplished. The times we all had on set are legendary… just like Piney… Miss you brother. RIP. Tig x.”
