Sylvester Stallone Celebrates the 45th Anniversary of ‘Rocky’
On Sunday (November 21st), Sylvester Stallone shared a snapshot of the premiere of his hit sports film Rocky. The action-packed movie premiered on November 21, 1976, which was 45 years ago.
“45 Years ago today, on a bright, yet freezing Nov. 21, Rocky Balboa was officially Born!” Sylvester Stallone declared in post. As previously reported, the film follows Stallone’s character, Rocky. He is described as a small-town Philadelphia boxer. The character gets a rare opportunity to fight the world’s heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed. Rocky accepts the challenges and strives to go the distance not to just win but to gain more self-respect.
The film was directed by John G. Avildsen. Sylvester Stallone not only starred in the film but actually wrote it as well. Stallone went on to direct the film’s sequels Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky IV, and Rocky Balboa. He did not direct Rocky V or Creed but he starred in the films. The original film scored ten Oscar nominations and won three awards.
Most recently, Stallone returned to Philadelphia for the special premiere of his 1985 film Rocky VI. Along with the premiere, he also discussed his acting career and how long he is planning to act. “When you get older, you get better. You get some wisdom. You may slow down physically, here and there a little bit, but you add gravitas. Your memory doesn’t, forget that! But with time, your emotions get weightier.”
Stallone then stated he’s at a point in his life where he just says what he thinks. “If [you] want to hire me, fire me, whatever.,” he explained. The actor then added, “When you’re between 30 and 40 years old you think you know it all. You don’t know anything. You walk onto a set and there’s a guy 50 years into his career, and that makes you realize how little you really know about what you’re doing.”
