There is always something that people get fixated upon in shows. One of the things that The Andy Griffith Show fans loved about the program at is its vehicles.
Because the show was airing back in the 1960s, all of the cars are now considered old fashion. The cars that were most often show were the ones that Sheriff Taylor drove around. Now, they are all collector’s items and are highly sought after. But, back in the day, they were some of the latest and greatest cars on the market.
When Andy Griffith passed away in 2012 at 86 years old, a favorite piece of memorabilia became his squad cars. This should come as no surprise to fans of The Andy Griffith Show. The Mayberry police cars in the show are Ford Galaxies. Arguably the coolest car on the show were the Ford Galaxie 500s.
“The Andy Griffith Show” Would Get Brand New Ford Galaxie Cars
According to IMDb, Ford Motor Company was supplying the show with new cars. Reportedly, whenever a new model of the Ford Galaxie would come out, the company would send one over to The Andy Griffith Show.
“Andy and Barney’s squad car was a Ford Galaxie. The cars were supplied free of charge by a nearby Ford dealer, and whenever the newest model came out, it was sent to the studio, and the old one was returned to the dealer who re-painted it and sold it. Altogether, there were about ten different Ford Galaxies used throughout the run of the series.”
The show would almost always feature Andy driving around one of the Mayberry police cars. Because the cars would get so much screen time, it was a no-brainer for Ford to send them cars. Although, it is not known how much business the show brought to Ford. It was most likely a significant number, enough for the motor company to keep sending cars.
Because The Andy Griffith Show still enjoys so much success, some people devote their lives to building replicas of the police cars. This video below shows someone who built an almost-perfect replica of one of the Ford Galaxy cars.
