Roy Clark is probably best known for his time on the country music country variety show Hee Haw on which the country crooner hosted along with Buck Owens on the long-running series. But, before he became Buck Owens, Roy Clark was Cousin Roy on The Beverly Hillbillies.
His iconic country fame is something for which the country star was proud. However, another one of the country singer and host’s most memorable on-screen moments came during his run on Beverly Hillbillies.
When the famous country crooner and host shared his very first on-screen kiss with a Beverly Hillbillies star, Donna Douglas while guest-starring on the show.
“Donna Douglas was my first TV kiss,” the actor, singer, and the host said of one of his favorite memories of playing The Beverly Hillbillies Cousin Roy.
‘The Beverly Hillbillies’ Gets A Visit From Cousin Roy
Roy Clark’s turn on The Beverly Hillbillies premiered on April 3, 1968. This, was just over a year before Roy Clark became a household name on Hee Haw, which first aired in the summer of 1969.
According to IMDB, in this Beverly Hillbillies episode titled “Cousin Roy,” Clark portrays one of the Hillbillies’ cousins, Cousin Roy from “back home.”
While the Clampett’s and Cousin Roy enjoy the visit, Roy’s time in Beverly Hills has a professional component; as he is opening a distribution center for his Mother’s Myrtle’s Tonic.
This, of course, causes issues for Granny. The eldest member of The Beverly Hillbillie’s clan has her own tonic potion to sell. And she is not very happy about any competition for her own tonic coming to the area.
In the 1968 Beverly Hillbilies episode, Roy Clark not only plays cousin Roy but also portrays Mother Myrtle herself.
One of Roy Clark’s favorite moments guest-starring The Beverly Hillbilies came at the very end of the episode.
When after serenading the Clampetts in their Beverly Hills mansion, Elly May Clampett plants a kiss right on cousin Roy’s cheek.
“That ain’t bad!” Roy Clark said of the on-screen kiss.
Clark exclaimed of the memory.
Since this 1968 appearance on The Beverly Hillbillies, Roy Clark went on to make a few other guest appearances as Cousin Roy.
Clark appeared in the 1969 Beverly Hillbillies episode’s “Cousin Roy in Movieland” and “Jethro the Flesh Peddler.”
