“The Brady Brunch” actor Barry Williams believes there’s no way you can compare the Brady family to any other.

Williams played Greg, the oldest Brady brother, on the 1970s sitcom series. After five successful seasons, the network canceled the show because of contract reasons. But in that time, Williams developed close bonds with his castmates and learned about a new type of family dynamic.

In a 2009 article for WRAL, Williams responded to fans’ questions, giving them a behind-the-scenes look at the iconic “bunch.” One fan asked, “Was the Brady Bunch family anything like your real family?”

“Well, not exactly, see I don’t think ANY family is like the Brady family. I am the youngest of three boys and grew up in an all-American middle-class way but what family communicates and supports and does all the groovy things the Brady’s did??” Williams said.

Part of that support and communication came from the actors bonding together as themselves, not just as the characters.

‘Brady Bunch’ Cast Were a Family When the Cameras Weren’t Rolling

Williams has admitted that “The Brady Bunch” cast acted as a family together both on and off set, especially actress Florence Henderson. As a mother of four children in real life and six children on the show, Henderson had plenty of practice in parenting.

“She was a great mom and took a lot of care with us. Listened to us, encouraged us, and… was very supportive all through our lives,” Williams told MeTV interviewers in a recent Q&A session.

Though that didn’t stop Williams from asking Henderson out on a date when he was just 16 years old. Henderson, who was 36 at the time, went with him as a friend.

Williams also has close ties to fellow cast member Christopher Knight, who played the youngest Brady brother, Bobby. In that same WRAL fan interview, Williams said that Knight is the one Brady he keeps in touch with the most.

“I love my whole Brady family but Chris and I have the most in common. We have gone on vacations, camping trips, competed in tennis together. He is a great guy. I beat him in tennis,” Williams said.

Knight even acted as Williams’ best man at his first wedding. The “Greg Brady” actor tied the knot with Diane Martin in 1990, though the marriage ended two years later. Williams headed to the altar again with Eila Mary Matt in 1999, but the couple split in 2005. Today, Williams enjoys matrimonial bliss with his wife Tina Mahina, who said “I do” in July 2017.
