The Brady Bunch was full of memorable lines and catchphrases. And Christopher Knight, who played Peter Brady, had his fair share of unforgettable moments. But the line he’s most famous for baffles him. Fifty years later, he still doesn’t understand it.

The iconic line is, of course, “pork chops and applesauce.” Knight put on his best Humphrey Bogart impression to sell it. Knight doesn’t get it. And he doesn’t understand why it’s endured as long as it has. The Brady Bunch is syndicated around the world. So, Knight said people yell it at him no matter where he is.

“Pork chops and applesauce? Where does that come from? I still don’t have an answer for that,” Christopher Knight told The New York Post. “My production (company) is Porkchop Phenomenon Inc. I have to be the only one on this planet that has a pork chop phenomenon. It’s odd; it’s not like somebody out there on social media said, “This is my favorite line,” and then recruited a bunch of people to believe the same way. When I went down to Australia, people there were asking me to say ‘Pork chops and applesauce.’ Who knows?”

That isn’t to say Knight hasn’t leaned into the phenomenon. He even has a pretty tasty recipe for pork chops and applesauce.

Though the most iconic line from The Brady Bunch must be Jan Brady’s “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia.” Eve Plumb, who played Jan, said the line originally went unnoticed. It didn’t become a cultural touchstone until Melanie Hutsell parodied it on Saturday Night Live. After that, Plumb was mostly remembered for the line.

“That’s why it’s so popular, thanks to her,” Plumb told the Post. “Until then, it wasn’t a thing.”

Christopher Knight Worried He’d Be Tied ‘The Brady Bunch’

Being a character on a popular television show like The Brady Bunch is a double-edged sword. Every week the show beams you into living rooms across the country, but those same audiences often can only see you as that character. That can be difficult for young actors who want to grow and change.

Christopher Knight said it took him a long time to come to terms with his Brady Bunch fame. But that now he has, he feels he “owes everything” to the show.

“I was a young leading man and wanted to get beyond that,” Knight told the New York Post in 2019. “But at the same time, I had the feeling I was being tethered to the show, and it was going to create a burden in being considered a serious adult. But it became this thing that I owe everything to. … What it really has provided is this wholeness with this community that’s huge. I’m a member of everyone’s family and that engenders this great outpouring of brotherhood and love.”
