‘The Brady Bunch’ Star Mike Lookinland Opened Up on the ‘Miracle’ That Child Cast ‘Made it Through’

The Brady Bunch star Mike Lookinland is amazed that any child could make it through the entertainment industry.

In a 2019 interview with Deseret News, the former actor spoke about what it was like to work in Hollywood at such a young age. He joined the business at just seven years old. “Bobby Brady” grew up right before viewers’ eyes. He even became a teenager on the set of the popular sitcom.

“And I had never really been the kind of person who said to himself, ‘I want to be an actor. This is what I want to do.’ But it turns out that I ended up on one of the most popular shows ever,” he said.

Although he enjoyed his time on the show, he did wonder what his life would have been like if he wasn’t working.

“I guess I just felt like I could go see what a normal kid would do with his life,” The Brady Bunch alum added. “I tell ya, it hasn’t been in the news so much lately. But there was a time when child actors who made it big and then got into their 20s got in serious trouble.”

Although a good portion of child stars may land in trouble or hot water from a scandal, the cast made it out relatively unscathed.

“Where you’re a big star but you became a big star when you were a child and screwed up your life in your 20s. It’s a bit of a miracle that all six of us made it through that,” he concluded.

‘The Brady Bunch”s Star Power

The Brady Bunch became a big hit but it didn’t find success overnight. Once it reached syndication, it became even bigger. Lookinland said that it came at a time when baby boomers were ten years old. The kids would come home from school and watch it.

Lookinland didn’t realize when he was filming the series that it would become such a cultural phenomenon. He had no idea that people would be still talking about it to this day. He believes that the reason why it is so beloved and cherished is because of nostalgia.

“I didn’t know when I was 9 years old, but by the time I was 20, it was pretty evident that it had staying power,” Lookinland said. “It’s like the music you loved when you were 17 or the places you used to go with your family … when you were young. Those things that were dear to you are the things that remain dear, moreso I think than new experiences.”
