In an old interview, The Brady Bunch creator Sherwood Schwartz discussed his favorite episode, which is perfect for the Father’s Day holiday tomorrow.

In September 1997, Schwartz gave a six-hour long interview to the Television Academy Foundation in Beverly Hills, California. The Hollywood creator, writer, and producer’s conversation eventually turned to his favorite episode of The Brady Bunch. The show’s creator said that his favorite of the series came in Season 1, Episode 14. “Father of the Year,” as it was titled, aired on January 2, 1970.

Marcia Brady, the oldest daughter on The Brady Bunch, was writing a composition for school. Additionally, it was going to be entered into a contest for the local newspaper, but she kept it a secret. She almost misses the deadline and had to sneak out of the house at night to mail it in on time. However, her parents caught her when she returned home and punished her for disobeying by leaving the house.

The irony lies in the fact that her composition was about her stepfather, Mike Brady. But she didn’t want to reveal what she wrote about in her submission to the paper. Yet she ends up winning the competition and the truth comes out.

“Her idea in the composition she wrote was that even though he wasn’t her real father, he had taken the real father’s place so well that he was her father. It was really a wonderful composition,” The Brady Bunch creator explained.

“Every time I see it, it brings a tear to my own eye because it was done so well. When you’re being punished for doing something for somebody who you love who doesn’t know you’re doing that. It was a wonderful episode. That was my favorite one,” Schwartz added.

‘The Brady Bunch’ Star Florence Henderson Described The Show’s Creator as ‘Fatherly’

For each of The Brady Bunch‘s five seasons on air, actress Florence Henderson played mother Carol Brady. She became a household name on the hit sitcom, and once opened up about her experiences on the show. In 1999, she also spoke with the Television Academy Foundation where she discussed creator Sherwood Schwartz’s relationship with the child actors on the show.

“Well Sherwood Schwartz could tell you because I think he saw them all,” Florence Henderson said in another Television Academy Foundation interview. “But he was very, I guess, fatherly to these kids.

The late Hollywood TV creator passed away at 94 years old in 2011, but he stayed close to The Brady Bunch children. Henderson, who also sadly passed a few years later in 2016, said he always tried to advise them in the right way. However, like many that grow up, they didn’t always listen to him.

“He really felt so close to them that he had such definite ideas about what they should do or shouldn’t do,” she said. “I think as they grew and developed very definite ideas of their own, I think that was sometimes very hard for Sherwood.”
