Countless fans fell in love with David Cassidy while he was appearing on the classic show, “The Partridge Family.”
And, while he was under a lot of stress as a celebrity and had relationships with many women, there was one woman who captured the actor’s heart.
According to an article on CheatSheet.com, Meredith Baxter acted as a guest star on “The Partridge Family” during its run. David Cassidy first met her while she was appearing on his popular show. Baxter’s most popular television role on “Family Ties” where she starred as Elyse Keaton.
Cassidy fell head over heels in love with Baxter, according to his autobiography, “C’mon, Get Happy: Fear and Loathing on the Partridge Family Bus.”
The book was released in 1994, according to the article.
David Cassidy Falls for Meredith Baxter
“Of all the actresses I dated, there was only one I fell for or thought I had,” Cassidy said. “Only one I really wanted to have a lasting relationship with. Meredith Baxter. She was a few years older than I was when she made a guest appearance on ‘The Partridge Family’ and we began dating.”
Cassidy’s relationship with Baxter began after she had divorced her first husband. She had two children at the time. He has reportedly described her as warm, intelligent, and beautiful. In order to keep tabloids out of their relationship, Cassidy and Baxter remained private about their feelings.
“I really carried a serious torch for her,” Cassidy said about Baxter. “I never told anybody about it except Susan Dey, Shirley (Jones), and a couple of other friends.”
Unfortunately, Cassidy’s busy work schedule kept the couple from spending as much time together as they would have liked. To make matters worse, according to the article, a kidnapping threat put even more distance between Cassidy and Baxter.
The couple had only been together for one month when the FBI began to protect Cassidy because they thought he was going to be kidnapped and ransomed. He was kept in a hotel and only made contact with others when he went to work. Because he couldn’t reach out to Baxter, she moved on to another guy – David Birney.
What made things even worse for David Cassidy is that he had to see the woman he loved with another man pretty much every day. Baxter and Birney worked together on a show in the studio where Cassidy also worked.
“It broke my heart,” he wrote of seeing her with another man.
Cassidy would marry three times before his death in 2017.
Cassidy Goes on to Successful Singing Career
“The Partridge Family” ran for four seasons, beginning in September 1970. It was popular for it’s musical numbers, family moments, and comedy. By far, it’s most popular musical number was “I Think I Love You.”
After appearing on the show, David Cassidy went on to have a successful career as a singer. He recorded 12 studio albums.
