‘The View’: Meghan McCain Speaks Out on Being Afraid of Getting Fired for ‘Being Pregnant’

Meghan McCain did something viewers don’t typically see on “The View,” she crossed party lines. On Tuesday, she agreed with Elizabeth Warren about an issue near-and-dear to her heart.

During the episode, the Democratic senator came on the show to promote her new book, “Persist.” She also spoke about getting national paid family leave and child care support. Warren revealed that it was personal to her since she almost lost her teaching job when she couldn’t get childcare.

McCain also chimed in and confessed how Warren was there for her during her pregnancy. “We texted each other when I was pregnant and then after I gave birth and I was very scared. I was very hormonal and for some reason, you were a lovely person for me to talk to these feelings about,” said McCain.

“I actually was scared I would be fired for being pregnant,” McCain said. She added that if “a co-host of this big show and I work for ABC and Disney” was concerned about losing their job, then this is a problem all Americans should be worried about.

Additionally, Warren said, “It’s about saying these policies are personal, they touch our lives. You want parents to be able to go to work. You want women to be able to go to work. We need affordable, available childcare. We need more women to lift their voices and we need more women to persist.”

After McCain gave birth to her first daughter, Liberty, McCain also urged her fellow party members to support paid maternity leave. “When I gave birth, I actually had post-natal preeclampsia. I was in the hospital for a week after on a magnesium drip. It really, really kicked my butt,” Meghan McCain said.

“I was planning on coming back to the show for the election, six weeks after I gave birth, [But] I was physically unable to,” she also said. “I was physically unable to come and I had to have my husband and mother-in-law help me do everything. It was deeply humbling to help me take care of Liberty.”

McCain added that “maybe it takes personal experience sometimes to get on board” with an idea. McCain said she hoped her co-hosts on “The View” would help make paid family leave an initiative for the show.
