Blake Shelton is widely known for his sharp personality and wit as a longtime coach on “The Voice.” In the world of country music, he’s a legend – but his reach extends far beyond the country world. He’s pretty much mainstream these days. So it’s understandably shocking that Shelton wouldn’t know music equally as popular and mainstream. However, during the latest episode of the singing competition, Shelton was appropriately teased for not knowing on of Nelly’s biggest hits.

During a battle round competition, newcomer coach Ariana Grande chose Nelly and Kelly Rowland’s 2002 duet “Dilemma” for competitors Vaughn Mugol and Katherine Ann Mohler. The hit was a huge success at the time – and still a fan favorite.

However, Shelton admitted he wasn’t familiar with the tune.

“My thought was, ‘Wow, I can’t wait to hear that song for the first time,'” Shelton said on the show.

This completely shocked fellow host Kelly Clarkson who said, “Did you live under a rock?” The good-natured Shelton explained there were a lot of rocks where he comes from in Oklahoma. Even co-host John Legend couldn’t believe it.

“This was an immensely huge song,” Legend quipped.

Not only was the song “Dilemma” a major success, hitting number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 weeks, it also went multiplatinum and won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance. To say the least, the song is recognizable to basically everyone. Apparently, Shelton was too entwined with country music at the time of the song’s release. You’d think his wife Gwen Stefani would have brought him into the know at some point.

Blake Shelton Brings in Dierks Bentley as Battle Round Judge

When it comes to country collaborations, Shelton knows about everyone in the business. On this season of “The Voice,” he decided to bring a very special friend to help judge the Battle Round of the competition: Dierks Bently.

“I brought in none other than my old friend, Dierks Bentley,” Shelton shared. “Dierks is Grammy-nominated. He’s won tons of country awards. He brings a ton of experience to the table.”

The two go way back – not just as collaborators in music – but as friends and hunting buddies.

“Blake’s a good friend of mine from way back,”  Bentley said. “We kind of cut our teeth on the same type of music, and we’re both old-school honkytonkers.”

He added:

“I’m so excited to get a chance to go in there and offer up any advice that I can, not only here on ‘The Voice’ but also down the road with whatever they do with their career,” Bentley explained.

“The Voice” airs on Monday and Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. PT/ET on NBC.
