On “The Voice,” Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton never miss an opportunity to poke at one another. And as a recent highlight reel shows, they don’t hesitate to do it while their fellow coaches, Ariana Grande and John Legend, look on in amazement.
“When we first met, I remember him like kinda giving me crap right off the bat,” Clarkson says of Shelton in the clip.
The video then flashes back to an early episode of “The Voice,” in which Shelton says to Clarkson, “I knew that you were gonna blow this.” Cut to Shelton and Clarkson more recently, trading barbs over Clarkson’s chair-turning speed.
“I turned around way before everyone else,” Clarkson says.
“I don’t know why being a spaz with the button is such a great thing,” Shelton retorts.
The clip then shows Grande looking on, appalled, as Clarkson and Shelton get into it yet again – including during a segment that was supposed to be about her and Legend.
“Oh my God,” Grande exclaims.
“These two cannot stop fighting each other,” Legend points out.
“I want them both to stop arguing,” Legend later adds. “I hate being in the middle of it.”
Cut to Shelton telling a contestant that winning on Clarkson’s team is only a so-so win, because, well, you’re on Clarkson’s team.
“The fact is the fact,” Shelton says. “I have won the show more than she has.”
But Clarkson seems to take the ribbing in stride, because she posted the video clip to her Twitter account Tuesday, along with the tweet, “Our relationship has been nothing but consistent…” And she included a laughing emoji and a heart.

‘The Voice’ Coaches Have Been Ranked, Adding Fuel to the Clarkson-Shelton Feud
Adding fuel to the fire, Screen Rant has just released its rankings of the best “The Voice” judges. And guess who comes out on top?
None other than Blake Shelton. The country star was declared unquestionably the best coach of the lot, for his effort, for his number of wins (count ’em: eight) and for his carefully-honed moves and bits with fellow coaches.
Still, Clarkson came in at a respectable third place. The pop star and talk show host earned the bronze for her effervescent personality, her three wins and her coaching versatility, not to mention her own gifted set of pipes.
Clarkson and Shelton Have Always Been Like This
That rapport – or lack thereof – between the two coaches goes back years. They’ve apparently always been at each other’s throats, in a joking way, of course. In a 2018 interview with 102.7 KIIS FM, Shelton and Clarkson were at it again, talking over each other and trading wisecracks.
“I’m just saying, he has never navigated as an artist,” Clarkson said. “So now, they not only get my help on my team, like knowing how to navigate a show – ’cause it is about strategy, a bit, it’s not always about just who has the biggest or best voice – so I think… I’m pretty much gonna beat him. We’ve made a bet. We have made a bet, and shook hands, and when I win he has to call me Queen Kelly Clarkson.”
If Shelton won the bet? Then Clarkson had to shut up for five minutes.
“Let me just tell you, the key thing to winning this show is the communication between a coach and an artist,” Shelton explained with a twinkle in his eye. “You know how communication works? Two people have to be able to get a word in.”
