Since last summer, “The Waltons” star Judy Norton has taken to YouTube to go behind the scenes on key episodes of the successful CBS drama.
Norton starred as Mary Ellen Walton, the eldest daughter and third child of John and Olivia Walton. Forty years after the family drama was taken off the air, Norton decided to go back and break down several episodes on her personal YouTube channel.
Earlier this year, she tackled a season three episode called “The Thoroughbred.” Right away, Norton mentioned how Oscar nominee Kathleen Quinlan guest-starred in the episode. Quinlan received a nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for the 1995 film “Apollo 13.”
“I’m a huge fan of Kathleen Quinlan’s,” Norton said in her video. “It was really special to get to work with her. I didn’t have a lot of scenes with her, but her career has been really extensive. I mean, she was nominated for an Oscar for ‘Apollo 13,’ she did the TV series ‘Family Law.’ And she did some breakout movies that I just thought her performances were brilliant.”
“The Waltons” star also mentioned “Zeus and Roxanne,” one of Quinlan’s lesser-known movies. The family-friendly movie was apparently one of Norton’s son’s favorites growing up.
“Although it wasn’t what I’d call a major film, it was really sweet,’ Norton said. “So, her career and her filmography has really touched me a lot over the years. And here she was doing two episodes of ‘The Waltons.'”
Who Did Oscar Nominee Kathleen Quinlan Guest Star as on ‘The Waltons?’
Viewers met Kathleen Quinlan on “The Waltons” as a “well-to-do” girl from a wealthy family. However, Norton admits, her character Selena Linville “wasn’t a snob.”
“In ‘The Thoroughbred,’ she’s more interested in John-Boy,” Norton said, “than in the other young man who is oh-so-willing to let everybody know how prominent his family is and how much money they have.”
“She’s just thoroughly unimpressed by it, which said a lot about her character,” Norton continued.
“The Waltons” star then goes on to talk about Quinlan’s second appearance on the show. Selena Linville returned in the season 4 episode “The Collision” after her family lost everything.
“She’s struggling with all that and wanting to run away,” Norton explained. “[She] wants John-Boy to run away with her… and is really harping on him because he’s not willing to drop everything and run away.”
At the end of the day, Norton said that the character “finds a way to come to terms with it.”
Since starring on “The Waltons,” “Apollo 13,” and “Family Law,” Quinlan has taken on many other roles. Some of the big-name shows she’s acted in include “How to Get Away with Murder,” “Chicago Fire,” and “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.”
