Have you every wondered what The Waltons house looked like in real-life?

Well, you no longer have to wonder. Actress Judy Norton, who played Mary Ellen on the show, gave a behind-the-scenes look at The Waltons house.

“I get asked a lot about The Waltons house. So, today, I thought I’d take you behind the scenes of The Waltons house,” said Norton during her video.

Norton then showed photos of the outside of the house. She said that the exterior of the house was located on the backlot of the Warner Brothers Studio in Burbank, California.

“And it was really just a facade. There was a front, there were sides, but not a complete back. There were a couple of actual workable spaces inside,” said Norton. “When you went in the house from the back porch, the space there led into what became our makeup room when we were on the backlot of the studio. So that was where every morning when the actors were called to get our hair and makeup done, we’d go into that room and the hair and makeup people were all set up with their makeup and lights in there.”

“All of the interior scenes in The Waltons house was filmed on Stage 26 at Warner Brothers Studio.

“We had the living room and kitchen as one section. And you can see the steps that go up to the second level of the house. But those steps, once we turned the corner and went out of sight, there was just a very small holding platform there. So, when we all had to come running down the stairs, we all had to be pretty crammed up there in the little area at the tops of the stairs.”

During the video, Norton even talks about “mystery” doors in the house. The show never established where they led to.

Was There a Working Kitchen In The Waltons House?

There are countless scenes where you see The Waltons gathered around the kitchen table eating a big meal. So, how did all that food get to the table? Was there a working kitchen in the house? Not exactly. During the same video, Judy Norton revealed that the door in the kitchen, to the right of the stove, actually led to another room on set. That room was where the crew prepared all the meals seen on the show.

“There was a space on the set where the property department would have a working kitchen where, all of the food you saw us eat, they would prepare and then bring it through that door to the table,” said Norton.

Norton also revealed that the bedrooms of the house were located in another area of the Warner Brothers Studio. Most interestingly, Norton shared that John and Olivia’s room is actually the exact same room as the girls’ room. All they did was change the furniture.

“So, there were actually only three bedrooms that we used as four bedrooms,” said Norton.
