Kami Cotler discovered a deeper meaning to the term “family” while being a part of the cast of CBS’s family drama “The Waltons.”
But she found out, as an adult, that some people in the entertainment industry couldn’t believe the cast had a positive relationship.
“For us it’s normal,” Cotler said in a 2015 interview with Cinephiled. “I don’t think I even realized how strange it was until we were doing one of the reunion movies when I was an adult.
Some People Surprised ‘The Waltons’ Cast Liked Each Other
“Some of the makeup people said, ‘Wow, you guys really like each other?'” Cotler said. “They had done reunion shows where that was definitely not the case!”
Kami Cotler played Elizabeth Walton, the youngest Walton child, from the pilot movie through the series’ run on CBS. Cotler also has made appearances in “The Waltons” reunion movies.
There was something special about the cast that went beyond what people saw on the TV screen. Cotler’s costar Judy Norton, who played the eldest daughter Mary Ellen, remembers the times when the cast would get “punchy.”
“I think most of it was really cast-related, working with a group of people that I love,” she said in an interview with Moviehole.net.
‘Elizabeth’ Actress Remembers Dancing With Ralph Waite
“We would be in there all day and the set would get so hot with 30 people in there with the cast and crew and we’d get punchy,” Norton said. “We would get silly and Ralph Waite would crack off-color jokes and then Michael (Learned) would start laughing and couldn’t stop.”
Getting back to Cotler, in a 2017 interview with VisionTV.ca, she talked about working with Waite. What came to her mind was his love of dancing, along with her memorable moments with him on camera.
She remembered an episode where Elizabeth is getting ready to go to a dance. As she comes downstairs in preparation to leave, her TV father decides to take her on a waltz. It’s a sweet memory from a long-ago time on television.
