15 Years Ago today, Reese Witherspoon wins an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as June Carter in Walk the Line.
Walk The Line is a musical drama starring Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash and Reese Witherspoon as June Carter. The movie chronicles the Man In Black through both his rise to fame and his battle with drugs and alcohol. A major plotline in the film is about the relationship between Johnny and June. June was a major force when it came to Johnny turning his life around.
Reese beautifully portrayed the headstrong, powerful force that June Carter was, along with her loving and vulnerable side. Both Joaquin and Reese provided vocals for most of the music in the film. Shortly after the film was released, Walk the Line became the highest-grossing music biopic of all time. It earned $22.3 million in its opening weekend and went on to gross $186.4 million.
Joaquin won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. He also earned a nomination for Best Actor at the Academy Awards.
Reese Witherspoon Said That Her Grandmother Inspired Her To Play June Carter In Walk The Line
Undoubtedly, June Carter Cash was an incredibly strong woman. She courageously navigated a male-dominated music industry, divorce, and motherhood. When it came to love Johnny, she did so fearlessly and with inspiring commitment. So, it’s no surprise that Reese was inspired by the country music legend. During her acceptance speech, Reese called June “a real woman, who had dignity, and honor and fear and courage and she’s a real woman.”
Reese also said that her grandmother had always been an inspiration for her.
“My grandmother taught me to have strength and self-respect and to never give those qualities away. And those were a lot of qualities that I saw in June Carter,” she said.
Reese also said that June Carter used to say, “I’m just trying to matter,” when asked how she was doing. Reese said that she always felt that same way – that she was simply trying to matter. After receiving the Best Actress award for her work in Walk The Line, Reese said that she really did feel like she was doing something that mattered to people.
