‘Three’s Company’ Star Suzanne Somers on Entertaining American Troops: ‘One of the Most Fulfilling Things in Life’

Former Three’s Company star Suzanne Somers said she grew up believing that serving your country was one of the most important and noble things a person could do.

She told Fox News that her blue-collar parents and relatives reinforced with their own hard work. And it’s why she was honored when the USO asked her to help entertain US Troops stationed overseas.

“I come from cops, firemen, and wardens,” she said. “Growing up, I realized that serving your country is one of the most fulfilling things in life, and I did it by doing TV specials on the USS Ranger Aircraft Carrier and another in Germany at Ramstein Air Force Base. I also took our sexy tap dancers to military bases in Germany and in Korea… Facing armed North Korean guards was unsettling, but I felt safe surrounded by our brave military.”

In her performance, which you can watch below, Somers tells the U.S. Navy crowd that they were so inspiring they made her want to pay her taxes. She also drew big laughs when she said she wanted to bring them all home with her, but her husband “always gets upset when I bring home sailors. You’d think he’d be used to it by now.”

The jokes were a prelude to a performance of the song “Bye, Bye Baby.”

Suzanne Somers On Marriage, Being Sex Symbol

The reason the USO asked Suzanne Somers to visit with US troops is because of her time on Three’s Company where she played Chrissy Snow, a ditzy blonde. The show had made her an icon of the era, and an international sex symbol. She even appeared in Playboy twice.

But she said she always found the title of sex symbol more amusing than complimentary.

“The [title of sex symbol] always amused me because, from my perspective, I’m a mom, a wife, an actress, a writer, and homebody,” she said. “I’m only a sex symbol with Alan (Hamel).”

She married Hamel in 1977, and she says the passion remains.

“We are deeply in love with each other and are constantly kissing and laughing, telling each other how much we love each other,” Somers revealed. “Alan is very tender with me and our Facebook Live shows we do three times a week are real between us. [I have] no idea what we are going to do each time other than drink tequila and cook.”

Though, she admits, there were rough patches. Her advice to anyone struggling in their relationship is to remember the good times.

“Alan and I did all of our fighting in the first 10 years when we broke up on a regular basis and then an hour later worked it out,” she explained. “My advice, and I’m not sure what it’s worth, is to remember the early days of the relationship when everything was love and respect, sexy and very hopeful.”
