In early 2020, the Netflix documentary “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness” captured the attention of millions and millions of people. If you have seen the series, you will know that the drama centers around the conflict – and there’s a lot of it – between Joe Exotic and Carol Baskin.
Fans of “Tiger King” will soon be getting a dramatized version of the story thanks to a new television show. And, according to PopCulture, photos of the actor playing Joe in the upcoming Peacock series have surfaced.
That actor is John Cameron Mitchell. He is most famous for playing the title role in the acclaimed stage musical and film, “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” as well as the Hulu series, “Shrill.”
In one of the photos of Mitchell dressed as the “Tiger King” star, he is wearing a pink shirt, brown leather jacket, and also a cowboy hat. Further, the outfit is very close to one the real Exotic is seen wearing in the documentary. He also bears a very close resemblance to the real Joe Exotic, whose actual name is Joseph Moldonado-Passage. This photo should really stir up excitement for “Tiger King” fans.
Playing Joe Exotic is something Mitchell is excited to do.
“I’m thrilled to take on the role of this modern folk antihero. Joe and I are the same age and like him, I grew up queer in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas so I feel like I know a little bit about this guy and his desperate attempt to conquer an inhospitable world,” Mitchell told Deadline in April 2021.
A photo of Mitchell in character on the show’s set was shared on Instagram by JustJared.

In real life, Joseph Moldonado-Passage, a.k.a. Joe Exotic, is still in prison as of July 19, 2021. He was sent there after being found guilty of 17 charges of animal abuse. He was also found guilty of two counts of attempted murder for his plot to kill Baskin. Exotic was found guilty in 2019. His sentence was 22 years.
Recently, news broke that the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that he must be sentenced again on the charges that he hired someone to kill Baskin.
