Home Improvement was one of the best sitcoms to hit the airwaves in the 90s. Even now, it’s a hard show to beat. Part of the draw of the show was Tim Allen’s acting, comedic timing, and chemistry with the rest of the cast. Additionally, the show didn’t lean solely on well-trodden sitcom tropes. Instead, the writers tried their best to recreate a real American family at the heart of the series.

Tim Allen bonded with the rest of the cast pretty quickly. Some would go as far as to say that they were like a family behind the scenes as well as on the screen. He and co-star Jonathan Taylor Thomas who played Tim’s son Randy were as close as they could be. This remained true until the end of the seventh season, according to Looper. Thomas left the show before the eighth and final season of the show aired.

JTT was a bona fide teen idol by the time he left the show. When he made his exit from Home Improvement he claimed he wanted to go to school or travel. Really, he just wanted to be out of the spotlight for a while. After all, he had been going strong in the acting world since he was 8 years old. Tim Allen completely understood the decision.

However, Taylor Thomas didn’t stay out of the spotlight for long. He took roles in several Hollywood films. That was fine with his former TV dad as well. However, when he decided to skip making a cameo on the final episode of Home Improvement, Tim Allen got a little heated.

Tim Allen and Jonathan Taylor Thomas Have a Falling Out

According to Looper Tim Allen ranted about JTT’s departure and subsequent acting career to TV Guide in 1999 after the finale aired. “He said he it was about going to school, but then he did some films. Did he want to do films? Did he want to go to school?” Allen said that he was confused. “I mentioned [publicly] that I was confused. I don’t think [Jonathan Taylor Thomas] liked that.

However, the rift between Tim Allen and Jonathan Taylor Thomas didn’t last forever. In fact, they seem to have mended fences. JTT and Patricia Richardson, who played Jill Taylor on Home Improvement made cameos on Allen’s sitcom Last Man Standing.

Tim Allen told Yahoo! TV that Jonathan Taylor Thomas had been shadowing. John Pasquin, Last Man Standing‘s director for about a year. He hopes to try his hand as a director and wanted to pick up some tricks of the trade. While there, Allen invited him to come on the show. So, it seems that their falling-out was temporary and all is right between the former Home Improvement co-stars.
