Tom Holland Is Heading to the Dance Studio To Prepare for Playing Fred Astaire in Upcoming Biopic

Tom Holland may be swinging on a web with Zendaya these days in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but soon he’ll be lighting up the big-screen showing off his expert dance skills.

Now that Spider-Man: No Way Home is just days away from nationwide release, the film’s star is gearing up for his next project. Hitting the dance floor as one of Hollywood’s most iconic dancers of all time.

“I’m going to dust off the old tap shoes and go back to Pineapple Dance Studios [in London] and start taking tap lessons,” Tom Holland says in a recent interview with Variety.

In the upcoming film, Spider Man’s Tom Hardy will portray the legendary dancer and actor Fred Astaire in the much-anticipated biopic.

And, the star notes, he’s excited to show off his dance skills on the big screen.

“I’m quite a good tap dancer,” Tom Holland says of his dancing skills.

“It’s something I’ve done for a very, very long time,” the movie star continues. “So it’s something I’m sure I’ll be able to pick up.”

Tom Holland Has Tapped For Audiences Before

Tom Holland’s first major performance as a tap-dancer came when he portrayed Billy Elliott for two years from 2008 until 2010 in the West End production of Billy Elliott the Musical.

However, the star notes, this experience hasn’t necessarily set him up to easily play the iconic Fred Astaire in the upcoming film.

Sure, both roles do center on the Spider-Man star’s ability to tap-dance.

However, portraying a tap-dancing Billy Elliott is likely different from finding the one-of-a-kind Fred Astaire grace we all know so well.

“Fred Astaire does have a very particular style,” the Spider-Man: No Way Home star explains.

“‘Billy Elliot’ was very much a kind of like scuffy boot kind of tap dancer whereas he is very elegant and graceful,” Holland continues. “So I’ll probably have to learn how to do that.”

But, this isn’t anything that the actor finds to be daunting.

In fact, Tom Holland is getting pumped to start practicing his tap-dancing skills for the upcoming Fred Astaire biopic.

“It’s something I’m gonna practice,” he says. “Something I’m very excited for and I think it will be a fantastic film.”

According to the interview with Variety, Tom Holland isn’t sure who will be playing Ginger Rogers opposite his Fred Astaire.

While he doesn’t yet have a costar to name, Holland quips that his Spider-Man movie producer Amy Pascal, the woman who brought us our favorite webbed super-hero via Holland, will be his Ginger.

“Amy Pascal is going to be my Ginger Rogers,” the star jokes.
