If you’ve ever watched “Magnum P.I.” then you remember star Tom Selleck, and his red sports car. The Ferrari 308 GTS boasts more than high performance. With appearances on movies and TV, this Italian luxury car turned into a pop culture icon.
During the 1970s, Ferrari released a number of unforgettable models. It was a golden era for the Italian luxury car company, and to this day they’re still highly sought after around the world.
The Ferrari 308 GTS was an instant classic, featuring its signature two-seater design. Car lovers also fell in love with its semi-convertible body style and removable roof section. As soon as this sports car rolled onto showroom floors it made history.
Although, the 308 GTS continued to make an even bigger mark in Hollywood. Recognized as Tom Selleck’s main ride, it appeared on the popular TV series “Magnum, P.I.” for eight straight seasons. The show purchased a brand new model each season. However, most cars were auctioned off at the end with the license plate reading “ROBIN1.”
The famous Ferrari also showed up in the 1981 movie “The Cannonball Run.” It starred Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. In the scene where they’re dressed as catholic priests, they cruise away in an eye-catching, classic red 1979 model.
The iconic car was also featured in “National Lampoon’s Vacation.” While being distracted by Christie Brinkley, Chevy Chase’s character drives a 1981 Ferrari 308 GTSi, sporting a “LUV ME” license plate.
Similar to all sports cars, the 308 GTS is quite costly. Hot Cars mentioned exactly how much this beauty would cost you nowadays, stating a vintage Ferrari 308 model (GTS, GB, GTM or GT4) would cost you at least $50,000. If you are looking to land a Ferrari 308 in mint condition, you might have to shell out at least $100,000.
So, if a Ferrari happens to be your dream car then the 308 GTS would be a great option. With its legacy and classic look, it’s worth the splurge.
Tom Selleck’s “Magnum P.I.” Character Almost Faced Death
The classic hit TV series “Magnum P.I.” was one of star Tom Selleck’s most memorable roles. However, the series could’ve ended much sooner than expected by killing off his character Thomas Magnum.
The 7th season was supposed to end the series. According to Distractify, the episode saw Selleck’s character shot and on the verge of death. The episode continued as Magnum fought for his life before heading off toward a white light at the end. That’s how the creators would have ended the show with Magnum’s implied death.
A big reason why the show continued was money. It was highly successful among viewing audiences. Also, they anticipated how Thomas Magnum would come back to life.
Fortunately, the series decided to close out with a happier ending. It showed Selleck’s character and his daughter as they walk down a beach together. Definitely a more positive way to reflect following the show’s long run.
