Tony Bennett Retires from Touring Per Doctors’ Orders: Report

Legendary crooner Tony Bennett has canceled the rest of his 2021 concerts and is officially retiring from touring, according to recent reports.

The 95-year-old singer’s health has declined in recent years and he’s now stepping away from the stage at his doctor’s request. Fans attending upcoming shows in New York, Maryland, Connecticut, Arizona, Oklahoma and Canada will surely be disappointed. Yet Bennett’s health is the priority over any future concerts.

His son, Danny Bennett, recently spoke to Variety saying that his father wouldn’t be singing live again. He admitted it’s been a difficult decision to make, but that it’s for the best.

“There won’t be any additional concerts,” Danny Bennett said to Variety. “This was a hard decision for us to make, as he is a capable performer. This is however doctors’ orders. His continued health is the most important part of this, and when Tony’s wife, Susan, heard the doctors she said, ‘Absolutely not.’”

Danny added that doctors aren’t concerned about Tony singing. Instead, it’s the stressors of traveling to the iconic singer that could be detrimental to his health.

“It’s not the singing aspect but rather the traveling,” Danny added. “He gets tired. We don’t want him to fall on stage, for instance. We’re not worried about him being able to sing. We are worried, from a physical standpoint … about human nature.”

Fans who have tickets to Bennett’s upcoming shows should contact local venues for refund information.

Tony Bennett Teams up With Lady Gaga in NYC

Last week, Tony Bennett paired up with Lady Gaga once again. The duo shared the stage for two concerts at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall. In fact, the pair of concerts will be broadcast at a later date to be determined.

Previously, the singers collaborated on his 2011 album Duets II. Lady Gaga joined him for the song “The Lady Is a Tramp.” Additionally, the duo collaborated again on an entire album. They released the album Cheek to Cheek in 2014, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Album charts. It also earned each singer a Grammy award for “Best Traditional Pop Vocal.”

In February 2021, doctors diagnosed Tony Bennett with Alzheimer’s Disease. He revealed the diagnosis in an interview with AARP, and shared the news further with his fans on Twitter.

“Life is a gift – even with Alzheimer’s. Thank you to [his wife] Susan and my family for their support, and AARP for telling my story,” Tony Bennett wrote on Twitter.

In the AARP article, his wife shared further details about his life with Alzheimer’s. She told the outlet that her husband is “not always sure where he is or what is happening around him.” However, she stated that his music and singing has helped his brain’s health.
