Trisha Yearwood turns 56-years-old today. The country music star was born on September 19, 1964. Yearwood is famous for her powerful vocals recording a string of Top 10 hits. But in recent years, she also journeyed into the realms of acting and culinary arts.
Yearwood rose to fame with her debut single “She’s In Love with the Boy”. The song remains one of the singer’s most iconic hits. According to The Boot, Yearwood said she felt inspired to write the song by events in her own life. After the single shot to the top of the charts, Yearwood had difficulty dealing with the pressures of success.
“You had to have more than one hit if you want to have longevity. You can always be a trivia question, but if you want to have longevity, it’s more than just the one song,” Yearwood told The Boot. “It’s more building a whole catalog of who you are, and who you are as an artist. That’s one of the cool things, I think, about country music: It’s really loyal and kind and lets you be an artist for a long time.”
Trisha Yearwood started her career as a backup vocalist to Garth Brooks.
Born in Monticello, Georgia, Yearwood grew up on her family’s farm, according to All Music. Elvis Presley was one of her prominent inspirations. As a child, Yearwood honed her musical talents, singing in musicals, choral groups and talent shows.
In 1985, Yearwood transferred from the University of Georgia to Belmont College in Nashville where she became an intern with MTM Records. She soon became a demo singer for the label. Fellow country singer Garth Brooks invited her to be a backup vocalist on his 1989 debut album. She also appeared on his follow-up album No Fences.
In 1990, Yearwood scored a record deal with MCA and released her debut album in 1991. “She’s in Love with the Boy” made Yearwood an overnight success. Her fears of being a “one-hit-wonder” proved to be unfounded. Three more singles from the album also made Top 10 on the country music charts. “That’s What I Like About You” was among the singles.
Following the album’s release, Yearwood toured with Brooks as his opening act. She became the first female country singer to sell both a million and two million copies of a debut album.
Trisha Yearwood continued to produce hits throughout the 1990s.
Yearwood’s followup album Hearts in Armor produced two Top Five singles in 1992. The music video for “Walkaway Joe” featured a young Matthew McConaughey. That album also went platinum. Throughout the 1990s, Yearwood continued to produce hit singles from her albums including “The Song Remembers When,” “XXX’s and OOO’s (An American Girl)” and “Believe Me Baby (I Lied).”
Yearwood also crossed into the pop genre. Her compilation album Songbook: A Collection of Hits reached Top Five on the pop charts. In 1997, she recorded “How Do I Live” for the Nicholas Cage movie Con Air. The Academy nominated it for a Best Song Oscar. The song gave Yearwood her first solo Grammy as well.
Yearwood also won Female Vocalist of the Year awards from the CMA in 1997 and from the ACM in 1998. The country singer continued to find various levels of success in the early 2000s. Her album Inside Out produced the single “I Would’ve Loved You Anyway.”
In 2005, Yearwood married her long-time friend and collaborator Garth Brooks. Previously, Yearwood had been married two times before. Brooks divorced his first wife in 2001. The two are married still today.
Yearwood made ventures into acting and the culinary arts.
In 2008, Yearwood took a hiatus from singing and country music. She focused her efforts on writing cookbooks such as Georgia Cooking in an Oklahoma Kitchen. Yearwood co-wrote the book with her mother and sister.
In 2012, Yearwood launched her own TV series on the Food Network called Trisha’s Southern Kitchen. On the cooking show, Yearwood produces Southern-inspired dishes for her family and friends. Yearwood had previously played a recurring role on the CBS show JAG in the 1990s.
Despite the hiatus, Yearwood found her way back to music. In 2016, she produced a duet album with Brooks called Christmas Together. In 2018, she released her first solo album in over a decade called Let’s Be Frank. The album is a tribute to Frank Sinatra.
She followed that with Every Girl in 2019, her first album with all-original music since 2007.
