The final season of Tim Allen’s hit TV show “Last Man Standing” is right around the corner. Fans who are already eagerly awaiting the season premiere have a little more to be excited about. On Wednesday, Fox released a pair of sneak peeks of upcoming episodes. The clips are both a taste of what’s to come as well as a reminder of what has made the show so popular for the last 8 seasons.
The ninth and final season will take place in the near future. The Baxter family is living in a post-pandemic 2023. Showrunners decided on the time jump to avoid dealing with the bummer that was 2020. They wanted people to be able to escape the events of the year while watching the show. Avoiding the pandemic and other current topics will also go a long way in keeping the final season from being dated.
New Clips Show That Tim Allen’s Mike Baxter Hasn’t Changed
Since the series is moving ahead in time and breaking from the previous plot, some might worry that other changes are coming as well. In these clips, fans can see that the wit in the writing hasn’t changed. Nor has Tim Allen’s expert delivery.
Mike Avoids Small Talk With Ryan
In this scene, one thing really stands out. They jumped ahead in time so that people would not have to watch the depressing events of the real world play out on their favorite show. They’re doubling down on this by having Mike jokingly look back fondly at the pandemic for a moment. When you can look back at the hard times and laugh, you know you’re out of the woods.
Tim Allen’s delivery in the scene is spot-on. He makes Mike Baxter not only hilarious but also relatable on an almost universal level.
Vanessa Vents To Mike About Mandy
It seems that Mandy and Kyle are once again staying at the Baxter home. We don’t know if it’s long term or not. It also isn’t clear if Mandy had the baby or possibly more than one baby. People did spend an awful lot of time at home during 2020, after all.
In the scene, Molly is venting her frustration over Mandy’s attitude to Mike over a tall glass of wine. She doesn’t want to say anything in fear that the Anderson clan will leave their home. So instead of talking things out with Mandy, she vents and drinks.
Mike Baxter’s reaction to the situation is another example of Tim Allen’s ability to nail the role of unflappable everyman. It’s a funny and sweet scene that shows that his heart is in the right place even if he is too stubborn for his own good.
