One of the most highly anticipated guest hosts of “Jeopardy!” is finally taking over the studio stage starting this Monday, July 26.
LeVar Burton ‘Jeopardy!’ Monologue
In anticipation of his first show, the “Jeopardy!” Twitter account shared LeVar Burton’s opening monologue.
“As a longtime viewer of the show, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to guest host ‘Jeopardy!’ And I’m proud to be here to honor Alex’s legacy, and I’m going to do my best to ensure that these talented ‘Jeopardy!’ contestants enjoy their moment here as well,” Burton said in the short clip.
The comment section is full of people saying “finally” and “good fit.” LeVar Burton is the former host and executive producer of the popular program, “Reading Rainbow.” He seems to be honoring his time with the show, seeing as his charity of choice is Reading Is Fundamental.
Reading Is Fundamental is the largest’s children’s literacy non-profit in the country. It works to inspire a passion for reading in children and gives children the “fundamentals for success.” LeVar Burtin has been a lifelong advocate for children’s literacy.
LeVar Burton is stepping in directly after “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts. He is one of the last few guest hosts that will appear on “Jeopardy!” before the show announces a full-time host before the next season. The only guest hosts after Burton are David Faber and Joe Buck.
Burton actually campaigned to get on the show and has expressed just how thrilled he is to be behind that podium.
“The highlight for me has been meeting the contestants and seeing how good they are at this game. I’ve been in this business for 45 years, and the team here at ‘Jeopardy!’ is one of the best I’ve encountered in my entire life,” Burton said to ABC 13.
LeVar Burton Is A Favorite For Host Position
Since “Jeopardy!” announced it was cycling through guest hosts, people were beyond excited for when Burton’s turn would roll around.
There is still an active Change.org petition that started last November that now has a quarter of a million signatures. While the petition originally was just to get him on as a guest host, it now serves as an outcry to make LeVar Burton the permanent host.
Burton is a novelist, an advocate for AIDS research, an actor and director, and has several Emmys, a Grammy, and a Peabody on his shelf at home. While he has thousands cheering him on, Burton has stated that although he wants the job, he won’t take it too personally if he doesn’t get it.
“It will hurt. I’m not going to lie. But if that happens, I will get over it. I will be fine. Remember: Everything happens perfectly and for a reason. That is my default. It’s all going to be OK,” Burton said to The New York Times.
