WATCH: Matthew McConaughey Belts Christmas Song in Jimmy Fallon Appearance

Matthew McConaughey and Jimmy Fallon performed an energetic musical number to spread some Christmas cheer.

This Christmas looks a bit brighter than last year. More families are switching out FaceTime calls for plane tickets back to their hometowns. It feels nice to safely celebrate the holidays with the people we love all in the same room together.

Matthew McConaughey and Jimmy Fallon celebrate this togetherness with a special song, “This Christmas Will Be Different.” It begins with a skit featuring McConaughey and Fallon talking in the green room together. They wish each other a Merry Christmas and share their big plans. Both say that they are excited to go back to their hometowns. Then, in Fallon fashion, some fun singing ensues.

A musical theatre inspired performance occurs! Viewers watch McConaughey and Fallon do and see all of the funny things that occur when returning home for the holidays. McConaughey sings about the next door neighbor who “goes way too hard with his [Christmas] lights.” He also sings about the difficulty of sharing his childhood bed with his wife. Fallon makes viewers laugh as he checks in on his drunk uncle, and shies away from a kiss under the mistletoe with his aunt. It is a lighthearted song about the quirky things we’ve missed over the past two years.

The Christmas number does not end just yet. Fallon opens the curtain to “The Tonight Show” studio and begins singing a classic to his studio audience. He croons the first few lines of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” when a flurry of special guests enter in a flash mob. The girl group HAIM sings a few bars and gets viewers in the holiday spirit. Fake snow and dancers all around the guests make the performance even more spectacular. It could even make the Grinch excited for Christmas.

Matthew McConaughey and Sing 2

Jimmy Fallon interviews Matthew McConaughey about his role in the new animated movie, Sing 2. This is the sequel to the 2016 film about a fun group of animals putting together a singing competition to save their local theater. Matthew McConaughey plays Buster Moon, the protagonist koala.

“The movie is good news. We need some good news right now, you know what I mean? It’s about chasing a dream but also about how you get it. The hustle,” McConaughey says.

The friends also discuss the versatility of the film’s soundtrack. According to McConaughey, it features a wide range of songs that the whole family can sing. Bono, Halsey, and Pharrell Williams are just some of the star-studded singers included on the album. Classics like “I Say a Little Prayer” by Aretha Franklin and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” by U2 are on the soundtrack.

Go see Sing 2 when it hits movie theaters December 22, 2021.
